This is the first board I have shaped and glassed myself. It rides well but feels a bit “loose” maybe shakey feeling? Bottom contour is pretty flat throughout with a slight Vee before the fix box. I have tried a cutaway fin and this Frye 8.5".
Does anyone have any suggestions why it would feel this way (Im guessing the sharp down rails or flat bottom?) and any other fin suggestions?
Please post a picture of the bottom from the tail end, distance of box from tail, and overall length. People may have some more ideas knowing these details.
Thank you! Sorry it is only allowing me to post one photo at a time and I didnt want to make too many in a row. Length is 7’2". Finbox slot is 7" from the tail.
I like your board - very nice/clean effort for your 1st - I’m kinda jealous! I think the fin makes a huge difference - try a fin w/ a bigger base - Greenough 4A is a great starting point. I really like the Christenson tracker fin for my midlength/eggs. The FCS single-fins have the mechanism so you can slide it up and down in the box to loosen or track a bit more while out in the water. Your mileage may vary. *** EDIT *** what I forgot to mention is that I really like the Skip Frye and cutaway fins for boards that you want to feel a bit more loose (hi-perf longboards etc or minimal surface area as Skip always seems to reduce his fins to the bare minimum) but for your intended ride/feel a slightly different fin/profile might suit your intentions better.
Nice first board! The hard rails will definitely give the board a looser feel, but also will make it more responsive since you can sink it into the water to turn. The pintail should give extra hold and control in the wave due to the continuous rail line and sharp edge which hopefully will counter the loose feel of the board. Not sure about the rocker, but that could affect its feel and make it more or less loose. Try new fins and positions of the fin. Remember, further back for more hold and drive while further up under your back foot will cause that looser feel. I’m sure it will surf great, just gotta find that sweet spot! Keep it up, there’s nothing better than surfing your own boards.
Great first board!
Back in the day, some first boards didn’t even make it to the water. Some…the resin remained a little tacky…
That looks like board number 50 plus. Great job!
