First board questions

I’m currently working on my first board and finding out how careful I need to be around the blank with hard objects such as my straight edge, tape measure, fingers, etc. as I have lightly dinged the foam in a couple of places that were basically finished and therefore can’t be sanded out. I checked the archives for info on patching foam holes and dings and keep seeing references to using spackle. However, I’ve seen spackle described differently by different folks. Will drywall mud suffice to fill a small ding? Also I saw where someone recommended mixing white Elmer’s and foam dust. I was just going to do a clear board for my first attempt so I’m wondering how badly will these repaired holes look and what’s the method least likely to show through the lam and hot coats?

Second qvestion - my board is a 5’11" fish with the wide point 4" ahead of center, but currently the thickest point (about 2 7/8ths) is even a little further forward. Should the thickest point always coincide with the widest point? I can take a little forward thickness out if necessary. Right now the thickness at the wide point is about 2 13/16ths and I don’t want to go any thinner there.

I’m having lots of fun shaping. I really dig the art of trying to make smooth lines and blending curves. I can’t wait to ride this board!

Thanks

Jim

if you’re working with a PU blank (i.e. Clark) and you put a small compression scratch or dent in it, a little heat can help pop it back out. if you gouged the foam, that’s another story. but otherwise, a heat gun can work wonders.

Thanks, Soulstice. It is a Clark blank, so I’ll give the heat gun a try.
