First (for me) balsa skinned board

Thanks to all those great how-to posts from Bert, PierreK, Sabs, DanB, Benny1… and many others. Could not have built it without all the information you guys have passed along.

I made many mistakes along the way but am very pleased with the results. Have not ridden it yet.

8’ x 18"x22.5"x15" x 2.75

2# EPS

3/16 balsa

nose and tail blocks

Bottom 4oz over and under the balsa

Deck 4oz under and 6 oz over the balsa

By the time I was all done I realize that I probably overbuilt the board.

Great job R and R.

Looking forward to the next get together so I can check it out. Can we get a close up of the nose and tail blocks.

What fin system for the side runners?

Very nice board!

Keep up the good work.

Ray, thanks for the kind words. The boxes for the sidebites are FCS.

Looks great. What was your strategy installing the center fin box? I’m planning a 2+1 for my next project.

Nice job! Maybe a little overbuilt, sure, but who of us doesn’t want our #1 to be around forever ? A little weight never hurt anyone and it will give you a reason to make #2 - trying to change something & see what happens!

I’m sure it will surf great.

What did you gloss with? Everyone’s glosses on balsandos look better than mine :frowning:

The foam is 2# density so I figured I didn’t really need to reenforce it much. The balsa is 3/16" so I went pretty close tolerance with the router cut figuring that the balsa could give good lateral stability. Finished it off with glass over the box to cap it off. Time will tell…

Benny1 - I wish I could get that nice poly gloss shine too.

I use an additional “hotcoat” with extra additive F for my gloss. I toyed around with the idea of thinning it down with alcohol but didn’t want to chance screwing it up. I wet-sand to 1200 and then rubbing compound to polish.
