Been so quiet on Sway’s actually got something done. Glue lines 1st go
Started this project back when we were discussing Barry Snyder’s “secret sauce” .Got the bug up my butt to try some glue lines at least.
Had a blank for a Griffin knock off layed out the outline and put some lines down, having watched Mr. Snyder on the band saw, of which I don’t have. I used my handsaw and carefully cut my blank into 3 pieces.
Now the fun part, I’m thinkin’ “Gorilla glue” O.K. but its color is like honey so I added some lamp black to a batch of sauce for poor “fang”. Set up a table, should have used mold release or wax paper (next time) as the Gorilla glue is atomic!
Another tip is once you coat the blank w GG and I used a “Bondo” squeegee to apply and pull out excess glue and here is my error. Wait for the glue to expand and keep working it until expansion ceases and you have an even coat on all surfaces. And glue it up, not to difficult.
Your observations will reveal one glue line is thicker than the other like I said wait!
Slicing blanks for stringers or gluelines is harder to do than it sounds. I’m giving you two thumbs up for having the guts to try it and for doing a nice job on the overall project. That’s a nifty shape - and the glue lines turned out fine. If it were one of mine, I don’t think I’d point out any boo boos. Most people wouldn’t even notice that one line is a little fatter.
I definitely have run across stringer and glueline warbles in factory glued blanks.
IF anyone knows of another way to do glue lines? Back in the day (16) I had a Harbor “SOL” and not only did it break me out of the Weber blues but was on cool looking board, 2 - 1/8" redwood with blue high density foam “tee band” with two offset blue glue lines. Just a milestone in my surfing life.
Somewhere I read about “Elmer’s” that had a “blue color” the only stuff I found on their website was yellow?
I thinking right now about “thick resin” and some blue tint or opaque pigment as I don’t think it would be any tougher then Gorilla glue to buzz.
Here is the only photo ( ah not a so good) of the “Sol” complete with " nose bumper" LMAO!!!
Instead of cutting the blank in thirds couldn’t you just run one of those little circular saws with the 3" blades and rout a 1/2" deep channel into your roughed out blank and then fill that with your glue? Let it cut all the way through at both ends to line up the deck and bottom channels for the 1-piece look.
Or maybe draw a pull saw down a straight edge? Or a knife. How about pulling a razor down a slightly mitered straight edge (twice) to cut a narrow vee-shaped channel? Shoot, for that matter you could seal the board with a light lamination, rout and fill the slot into that and then glass over it. Skip the hassle of dealing with the different density around the glue lines and the mess the color makes during shaping.
I dunno if it would work but if it did it seems like it would be a lot easier and involve a lot less equipment than cutting the entire blank and clamping it back together.
I f’in hate Gorilla glue. Whether it’s for woodworking or surfboards. I once re-attached a snapped nose with GG and it sets up much harder than foam. Makes it hard to avoid having a ridge where the glue line is. A friend of mine does furniture restoration, mostly antiques. If a customer brings in a repair and they used GG on it, she charges them extra to re-do the mess. I have no idea what they used for glue lines back when those first became popular. I think Elmer’s would be a better choice. Maybe add plain old pigment if you want color?
If you want to use a circular saw to make a straight cut, here’s my method. I use a combination of cabinet grade half inch birch plywood and 1/4" lauan…
I make a straight rip of the 1/2" ply, about 6" wide. Then another rip of 1/4" that’s 12" wide. Screw the two together and keep the edges parallel. The 1/2" is the guide part. The fence, if you will. The 1/4" is the base. The saw rides on the 1/4" and so it will not mar whatever you are cutting.
Of course, I’m smart enough to not notice other women when my wife is around. She SAYS that she’s issued me a girlfriend card so it’s okay if I score some action on the side but I strongly suspect it’s a trap, and I ain’t gonna fall for it. Not that I have the ability to score some action on the side anyway, but that’s a different problem.
