The waves this winter have been solid, which is good but I’m down to only one board after breaking my 6’1" and 6’5" thrusters. All I have left now is this 5’8" Roberts white diamond that I bought from a friend last summer who found it too corky. I threw the biggest fins I own (fg-7’s) in it and I’ve been riding it in everything. If the waves get any bigger than 8ft faces the thing is pretty sketchy but honestly I’ve had some great sessions on it in bigger surf than I would have expected. Anyways, I found an old broken longboard blank in the rafters of my parents garage and I want to shape a board out of it because I think it would be fun and I’m trying to save money right now. The front half of the blank is 6’6" so I was thinking I’d make a 6’0" with a similar outline and rocker to the WD but maybe foil the rails a little more and pull the tail in just a bit for better hold in juicy surf. I would go longer but I think I might run into problems with the lack of rocker in the blank. I was thinking a round pin rather than a diamond tail might hold in the barrel better? I just want something that can handle more size but still has some of the looseness and built in speed of the roberts.
Is that your way of saying there’s probably not enough rocker in this broken blank to make something resembling a modern stubbie shortboard? Cuz you might be right…
I’m not opposed to the idea but like I said I’m trying to build something that will handle bigger waves which, I may be mistaken, but I didn’t think the Mini Simmons were exactly known for their big wave prowess.
In San Diego County, Ca. a short board blank cost between 45 and 65 dollars. You can carve out a small surfboard from your dads broken log but at the end of the day you will not be saving money....And.... the rocker might work for a fish or a mini but not really what you want.
Take a good look at the longboard in the link. I got the broken board for free from a Sways friend...a good Karma deal...I fixed the board and sold it to another Sways friend for $125. That would be my cost of labor and materials. I used that money to buy Resin and other supplies.........I just keep rolling it over.......and helping people......
Fix the longboard , sell it , and use that money to buy the blank you want........
or Kick down 50 bucks to buy a blank..............
Oh...gosh...my bad.....Let me guess........you live no where near California. There's no market for used boards in your town and no way to buy a surfboard blank without paying $1000 for shipping.....
Yeah, basically I’m in southern Oregon and there’s no blanks within 8 hours and with the price of gas…it would only be worth it if I picked up a quiver of blanks. Which I would LOVE to do, trust me. I just don’t think my girl would appreciate that right now and it’s too damn rainy to be bunking in the dog house. The used board scene is laughable unless I’m looking for a SUP or kiteboard…
I’d fix the longboard to sell it but it’s tail section is nowhere to be found and it’s not even a longboard, it’s a longboard BLANK. A clark foam one, at that. There’s also an in tact 8ft gun blank up in the rafters but the old man wont part with that for some reason, as if he will ever ride anything but his 10’6 takayama again.
That thread- it was great but honestly lacking in the bad hair department. Although I only made it to page ten, so…maybe I just gave up before it got good.
Sorry about the similarity. I thought I’d try to catch it early, but I actually don’t have a big investment in the name. If it’s your usual nickname, maybe you ought to have it, I could go with something else.
I actually just moved to Bend about a little over a year ago - most of my surfing has been done in Washington. I’m looking forward to trying snowboarding this year. The year started great, but it’s been raining up at Bachelor the past few days. It’s looking big and messy on the coast cams today, too. A good day to be shaping or maybe looking for one of those up the river and inside the bay breaks.
Eddy, thanks for that lead, I will look into it. I actually discovered that Hood River has a place that sells US blanks and even has a decent amount in stock. I’d prefer some EPS though so I will see about this Lanny fellow. 'sides, it’s a good excuse to take a trip out to the point and see if I can’t get my ass kicked.
I’m not giving up on this old piece of foam, though. I see a board in there and I’m going to make it happen. Already got my outline drawn out and it looks sweet. If I screw things up at least I will not be out much.
6’0" x 19 3/8" x 2 1/4" Round pin. Wide point 1.5" above center. Low entry. Deep single thoughout. 5 fusion boxes.
OrigiMoss, don’t sweat it. I’m not attached to the handle (doh). I’m just lazy and my brain isn’t coming up with another good name but once this thread dies I will find a new one, promise.
Cognitive dissonance happens easier and easier at this age, and it was kind of disconcerting to see comments and not remember writing them.
Depending on what you find with Lanny Shuler and the Hood River source, another option might be Gorge Performance in Portland, I think they are stocking US blanks now as well.
And yeah, the point: you can maybe pick up one of those neat deer head hood ornaments while you’re there, too.
