I have a brand new usa 12’6" blank with a stringer that was gifted me nother kiter had it in his garage gathering dust so I guess I need to build an SUP. I will be using it for kiteboarding, so it should be more durable than a usual SUP, it needs to be able handle getting slammed at 20 knots in medium sized waves, I want to use it as a sort of freighter, use it to cross lake st clair to the flats, with my other kites and boards strapped to it. I wish I could tell you the density I’m not positive.
So I guess my plan is to glass the top and bottom 10oz, fin patch, corecork (or some other veneer?) on top of the deck home made deck patch and for carrying cargo a dozen extra leash plugs on top of the deck so I can tie down my cargo. But of course I have no idea what I’m doing, any suggestions are welcome. Where do you buy your glass or corecork from? I got about 3/4 of a gallon or so west system 105 from the local hardware store I got leftover from building some twintips.
I’ll start work on shaping it this weekend looks like no wind. BTW I already asked this question in kiteforum.com they said I should ask in swaylocks.
We’ve got everything you need right here. Maybe you’ll want to try laying up some kevlar if you’re looking for impact strength? Shoot us a PM or email if you have any questions or if we can help you out. You’ll need more resin for sure too.
All of your tensil strength is in your lap so you can adjust it according to the design of the board. You could also do a kevlar or veneer inlay where you’ll be standing or where the footstraps are. Plenty of options to avoid having a rigid beast in the water. Just have to figure out what you want.
You should try kiting with a 12 ft SUP, then rethink the whole process.
It doesn’t need to be tough. You’re not going to jump with it. In fact, you’ll likely never kite with it after you try it. Been there done that. Sucks.
Build yourself a nice paddling board. The kite use should not be factored in.
