I am trying to glass my first board and had some questions about it. in a book im reading it says to glass two deck layers at the same time and then do the bottom, but a guy i talked to said to glass the bottom let dry, glass one top let dry, and then the last top.
Bottom first, spread the resin good, make sure you saturate the cloth then get the resin out of the weave, use the back of the squegee to do it,wrap the rails, then get the resin out of the rails. let it kick sand the lap, then cut your deck cloth,do the same to the deck as the bottom, let it kick then hot coat, yes add wax,use over 20 cc of wax give your self time for the wax to rise to the top, coat the laps under the deck let dry then sand laps don’t over sand and use 60 grit sand paper ,the bottom HC use less resin then the deck, tape it off, use less wax also let that kick, peel your tape.If your using futures make sure you tape them off.
if this is your first glass job, you might have a bit more trouble doing 2 layers of cloth on the deck at the same time than if you did one at a time.
certainly most pro’s do both layers at once and so do most guys on here, i would expect. but on the first job i would want to go with maximum control rather than maximum efficiency.
a second layer put on by itself would not add all that much more weight.
i’d go step by step. especially on my first laminations ever.
but then, i look both ways before i cross a street, too.
Wax is added to laminating resin to make a hot coat resin. You can also buy hot resin with the wax already in it. Be sure that you know which resin you have. If you have hot coat resin DON’T ADD THE WAX! I’d also lam the bottom first, then the top. Go with two layers at once, it’s not all that difficult. If you can, try to get Glassing 101, or the Masters series on glassing. They will both help clear up some of the confusion and doubt.
i just did my first glass job using epoxy, on the deck i did both layers of glass at the same time…the layers were sliding off of one another so i saturated the bottom layer a little about 6" fom the nose and tail this allowed it to stick to the foam a little better and to the top layer of cloth…use more resin than you did on the bottom as it has to soak into 2 layers…you wont need twice as much but you will need more. hope this helps a little
I laminate two layers with epoxy. I pour a bit down the stringer and then use the roller to spread it out. The resin I have been using (Resoltech) soaks in reasonably quick enough to hold the cloth in place. The roller also helps as opposed to a squegee in this regard. I have recently got some ResinResearch with Fast hardner and I mixed up a batch to see how it goes and I noticed that it was far less thixotropic than the other resins I have seen, as such it may allow the cloth to move a bit easier but on the other hand it probably saturates the fiber really easily.
def do both top layers at the same time. .after glassing the bottom. .the resin will bond better and you will be less likely to float the cloth and you wont get bubbles in between the weave. . . plus if your glassing over the top the second time around , the cloth will lay out poorly when it gets hung up on the edges of the previous lap. . .use laminating. . . then. … . sanding. … and if your gonna buff it . finishing resin. . . sanding resin doesnt buff out that well. . . measuring your wax is perhaps a lil tricky if your not familiar with it. . . destination surf sells all the resin in gallons. . . @ 30 bucks a shot… . remember . every time you add a layer there is dirt , dust, contaminates , moisture that will currupt adhesion and show at the end. . . just take your time. . . and give yourself enough working time (less catalyst)
also careful not to squeegee out TOO MUCH resin from the cloth… it can create some large bubbles in the cloth when it cures (“dry lam”?). It’s i mistake I regretted on the first board i glassed.
Welcome to Swaylock’s. You have asked a good question and you have gotten some very good replies. If you add your locaton to your user profile you might be able to find some one in your local area that can help you. So far this thread has response from Europe and both coasts in the USA. Some AUS intrest too!
I learned more from the Glassing 101 video than I can ever tell you. I bet the Master Glassing video is even better.
What type of foam are you using? What type of resin are you using?
I glass the bottom first. I glass two layers of cloth on the deck second…both layers at the same time. I make my own logos too…
Still a backyarder but board #10 meets or exceeds all expectations!
