Building a Firewire Potatonator clone 6' x 21" x 2 3/4"
I am building my second board and want to use Suncure for the lamination and hot/gloss coats. There are three types sold at Surfsource.net.........Laminating, Sanding, and Gloss Suncure. A gallon is $43 and a quart is $19. I wanted to just buy a gallon of the laminating resin and use it for hot/gloss coats too, but was told it would remain tacky and not work for the hot/gloss coats. So my question is does anyone think I can get by with a quart of the laminating resin (32 oz.) for the lamination? I know a quart of the gloss will be enough for the hot/gloss coat. I will be using 6 oz. E fiberglass one layer on the bottom and two on the top.
Buy 1 Gallon of Laminating resin, buy Mod-C seperately, 4 Fl oz per gallon is the mix ration. so this way you can use what you need for lam’s, and what you need for hot coats. Also you dont NEED gloss resin, you can just thin out your sanding resin with a good amount of styrene and it will work. It will not be the same by any means; but it will polish… Just giving suggestions to save you money.
a2tall I don't know what Mod-C is? Is that hardener (MeKp)? I am assuming I would use the lam resin + the Mod-C for the hot/gloss coats? The board is going to be very simple and not polished (no colors or graphics). If it looks good after the hot coat I am not even going to do a gloss coat.
Mod-c or surfacing wax. is that wax mixture that is in sanding resin. you can just buy your own “mod-c or surfacing wax” and add it to laminating resin to make is sanding resin… the wax deprives the resin from oxygen which makes it harder and easier to sand unlike laminating resin which remains somewhat tacky and will gum up your paper… MEKP is your catalyst or hardener. i always add a cc or so when using suncure just because you never know…
The only one I buy is the lam resin, like A2tall said you can make all the others from it. Get a small 2 oz mekp for fin boxes and leash plugs and or logos. I always like to get the 32oz size wax solution for making hot coat and gloss coat mix. That size will last for quite a few boards so it’s a good buy.
