first-time jitters

3 pints? whats that in english..?!!!

Sounds a lot to me - remember that big Boco-Rio fish I did? that was laminated on the top deck with 2x 4oz cloth and 750g weight in resin research epoxy resin. probably 750g is a pint and a bit in volume? I could have used less as I scraped a lot off. Then, I think I used about 400g for the fill coat. that board is 9'2 and getting on for 26" wide. I like RR epoxy - the data sheet gives you the ratios by weight (yay!) and by volume (boo!). I prefer using scales.

Also, I remember reading that vinegar removed RR epoxy resin from hands and brushes - it works for sure, so could be worth a try

howdy blue,

i think 3 pints is about enough for a cherry-mango-avocado trifecta ice cream binge over the holidays hehe " )

in any case google says 1 Pint = 0.4731764725 Liters

ergo it'll make 1.42 liters total, which sounds like a lot to me. bake-worthy measuring cups at the mall shops were being sold at ridiculous prices so i figured it wouldn't hurt to turn this sundae server into a decent measuring cup :

i got no idea how many ounces it measures out but at least it comes free with a value meal hehe

cheers,

btw for the final polishing stage, which of the 4 rubbing compounds below would you guys recommend that works well with epoxy resin?

that’s all i could find at the grocery earlier. any first-hand pros & cons?

Surfiber.  When I am dealing with an unkown I mix up only 6 oz of resin at a time.  I pre measure enough resin in small cups so I can do 4 or 5 units. When I start I mix batch 1 total 6 oz put it in my roller pan and roll it out on the cloth working from the middle of the board toward an end. When that batch is spread on the cloth mix batch 2 and continue on. After you have finished one side of the board you will have a good idean how much it will take for the other side. The advantage of  doeing small batches as you go is you are always working with a fresh batch and have lots of working time. The dissadvantage is its slow,  After you have done a few boards you would know how much its going to take and do it in one batch. When I was doing  my big sup I was about 2/3ds of the way along the bottom when my wife called from town haveing locked her self out of her car. She was freaking out so I just evened out the batch I was working on. Drove into town and unlocked her car. Got home about an hour laiter and continued with the glassing. If you look real close you can see that cold joint but this is a good example of how forgiveing epoxy is. It's not possible to guess here how much resin it's going to take for your board. That is going to depend on how many oz cloth you are useing and how much resin soaks into the board.

A ballpark amount might be calculated by weighing the cloth.  If you cut it to length but don't trim to outline, weigh it, and multiply X 1.5 you should be close.  It never hurts to have a bit extra on standby in case you need some to finish off your laps or whatever.

yup that should suffice, thanks john!

btw i’m continuing this section under my build thread, check it out

cheers,

howdy ogre, it’s 6oz of the worst possible make found this side of the pacific hehe i’m never gonna buy fiberglass cloth from said supplier ever again " )

and yeah, merry christmas fellas!

cheers,
