First Time Shaper - Is my tail too thick

First time shaper here. Trying to build a 2+1 funboard/single fin. Happy with the overall shape but the tail seems kind of thick/round. I’m an intermediate/advanced surfer but not looking for high performance here. Just something fun for East Coast US surf. Dims are 6’3" x 19 3/4 x 2 7/8. EPS blank. Want to make sure I’m not making a mistake with the tail. Thoughts?

Looks too thick to me.
Shape it 'til it looks like a surfboard

Without calipers or a decent side view, it’s hard to say for certain but my gut says it’s too thick.  If you have some thickness calipers, try measuring 12" from either end.  Conventional ‘wisdom’ - (I.E. often incorrect) says about 1 1/2"-1 3/4" thick at either end and pretty close to the same at nose and tail… +/- 1/4" or so.

A thinned out tail is going to offer better control when the wave gets punchy.  A wider thicker tail will get up on plane easier in gutless surf. Your mission is to find the perfect medium.

You could find a board you like and compare it to what you have. It looks pretty thick to me. I have some rail templates that I use to check this sort of thing when I’m not sure.

12 inches from nose - 2 1/8

12 inches from tail 2 3/8

Very end of tail 1 3/4

Overall i was going for a thicker than normal board. I’m happy with mid-point thickness and flat deck of board, so to thin out tail do I just take from bottom (adding more rocker)?

More pics…

Best reply I’ve seen in a while hahaha!

Rocker is independent.  Only increase it if you want a shorter turning radius and less speed.  A thick tail end is 1".  Foil it from the deck side.

If you were going for a higher volumne board don’t doubt yourself. Make it look like you want and surf it.

Made changes. Happy with results. Looks right now. Thanks for feedback.

Might be too late but make sure it is thick enough for the fin box. Looks like the re-shape is.

I mistakenly typed 1/2" to 1 3/4" for tail thickness dimensions…  corrected to read 1 1/2" to 1 3/4".  Sorry for any confusion.  Looks like you have it figured out.

What thicknesses did you end up with?

A few years back I cut/pasted a good article by Dave Parmenter in which various dimensions, including nose and tail thicknesses are mentioned for different types of boards.  It’s a classic article worth checking out and you can find it in this thread…

dude - put that romex in conduit!!  No way, in a shop setting.

Imagine glassing a board in conduit. That stuff is as tough as nails. Could be on to something!
