First wood surfboard

Hey im new to this forum but anyways to the point, im making a going to be making a 5’ 10" retro fish obeche hollow wood surfboard. However it is for my school coursework and therefore it has to incorperate something that hasn’t been done before, therefore I have decided to make my surfboard with a removeable centre piece which is a bodyboard. As of yet i have not found any found any examples of this, everything is fine except i’ve never made a hollow wooden board and I am struggling to think of a simple yet effective way of locking the body board in place when surfing, the board board will be set in the top of the board as to not hamper the dynamics as it travels through the water. Any help would be appreciated with regards to a locking mechanism or making a hollow wood board. Thanks.

Check out the Tree to Sea forum for making a hollow wood board help:

Wood boards are already heavy.  I think that adding a body board insert would put it into the really heavy category.  An idea like that should probably be tested with foam first.

I have a different idea for you.  Paul Jensen is always saying how riding a HWS is like riding a finely tuned instrument.  When you beat on the bottom of a HWS you get some pretty cool sounding tones.  I think it would be cool to create a board that doubles as a musical instrument.  You could reinforce difference areas along the bottom to produce a range of tones.  I'm not sure how you would tune it though.  That would be your challenge.  Another idea would be to add big a hollow tube going down the center from tip to tail.  When you blow through it just right it would resonate like a big didgeridoo.

sounds like a “project”, interesting anyway. some things you need to consider will be fitting the bodyboard naturally into the deck. I would get a bboard and fit it into the rocker profile. water tight inner compartment and make a dummy bboard so you have the option of surf and bboarding at the same time with your best friend or whomever.

Id use the power surfboard type of construction for the sboard and bboard. id use a simmons ish outline for the near match. id screw the bboard to the sboard. yeah sounds good. Hope you see it through. keep us posted.

Or you could incorporate a small design feature that serves a dual purpose… such as a vent valve that incorporates a key holder.  Safe place to keep your keys, makes sure you always open the vent valve after your surf.  Also since this is a small additon to the design it will be easier to prototype so that the final version is functional.

So cheers, does anyone know were to get free plans to make HWS ? or any locking mechanisms ive thought of rubber seals, toggle clamps I just need to find something simple and effectivie. Cheers.

still lighter than a les paul haha

treetosea.org (which has already been recommended) is the place to go. hit the link for template library and you’re set, or you can download aku shaper and JedAil’s plugin which will take any AKU .brd file and generate the templates you need to build your own shape.

it isnt wood...but may give you some ideas
