fish bottom question

so…finally a few days ago i got started on my first board…taking my time, im getting

closer to a ok looking result, havent started the rails though

…i based my design on the 5`5 lish fish from his book, but i

guess it differs in some places…my shaping-booth as i call it is super small so i struggled

in the beginning but now i find it ok…let me tell you that i took of a whole lot of foam off as

i had laminated two blocks…i went into a planing frenzy and when i stopped after a while

and turned around the whole shed was pink…i was wading in it…hahaha…its all cleaned up

now…anyways what i am pondering on is: for this fish how far up from the tail should i make the

rails hard…i had 16" in my mind but i think it seems a bit too short…?maybe more like 1/3 of

total lenght?not much rocker:nose has around 3" and tail maybe 1"

anyone? im taking babysteps…ill try to post some pics during the holidays…

thats it for now but ill be back with more boring Q`s soon…happy easter to all swaylockians

16 inches

funny…foreal

On a 5’5" (65") board, 1/3 of the length is 21 2/3". That is 5" off of the 16" mark. Not much of a difference on a ruler but I wonder if you make two boards with the same dims, and start the hard edge at each mark respectively, would you be able to feel the difference?

I put my elbow on the tail end with the surform or sanding block in the palm of my hand. That’s where I start the rolled under edge. About 17 inches. Mike

you raise an interesting topic. i ride alot of fish around the 5’5"-9" mark, and i always put hard edge ( so hard you could shave on it) right up to the toe of the front fin, now that i measure it, it is almost exactly 16"- who knows

so ill go with around 16…but i wanted to know why…whats the theory on this…

oldskull, the way I learned it was that you want water to break off the aft rail and tail, you don’t need any water wrap on the rails near the fin because the fin is providing the hold.

thanx scott…so many things to take in and staying here too long and reading can make u dizzy…
