Fish in Hawaii??

Does anyone even ride a fish there? Hittin’ Waikiki this summer. Wonder if a fish would work for Queens or Populars.

Hey BDB

Been to Oahu probably 20 trips, most over 3 weeks, and never surfed those two spots.

But for sure it will work. They ride canoes out there, from 2 paddlers to 8 person. They ride boogie boards, longboards, paipo boards, funboards and regular surfboards.

Fishes ARE ridden in Oahu, just that you have not seen them.

Hope the sharks aren’t trollin for surfers while you are there.

my friend rides his pavel quad fish 6’2" in double overhead oxnard beach break and rarely rides anything else–I think it should work at waikiki. He said today the speed is unreal and addicting:) His is pretty thick with double wing.

Nice fish. How’d you get that buttcrack stringer so smooth?

foamdust has a Lis fish he has been riding at Waikiki…maybe he will answer your post. I think he likes. Plenty pictures in my old 70’s mags of fish on the south shore.

Hey

Buttcrack

You surform down to half the distance.

Grab your drill, look for a rotary tooth or rough stone bit, grind to finish.

Bet there ain’t no fish’s working Pipe or Sunset!

Wassuup, Boondock!

My apartment was right in back of the Hyatt Regecy. Queens and conoes are my home points. I was usually one of the few shortboarder that surfed those breaks everyday. The truth is fishes work great for those breaks. Have you ever seen the Wade Tokoro winged fish. Those types of boards work so good. Those are one of my favorite shapes. If there is a swell and the waves get over head, you might want to ride a regular squaush. Even though it’s Waikiki when there’s a swell there still is a fair amount of power. I’ll tell you a little secet. I you get a swell ride canoes right on a low tide. The right usually has a nice line before hitting the sand bar, and if you wait for the right wave and you see a double up forming it’s possible to get a sick barrel. Also this point doesn’t have so many tourists and locals. Advice be careful surfing there in the early mornings that’s when all the real locals take over the rights and lefts but mostly the lefts. As long as you don’t drop in on anyone you should have alot of fun. Enjoy your fish!

Hey Boon,

I don’t see a lot of guys riding fishes here, you see a few modern fishes now and then and I know a couple of guys who ride Kand Garden fishes, but for the most part not a lot. I’ve been riding mine quite a bit since getting it, have used it in small waves up to 3 feet. on both north and south shores, having fun trying to get it wired. A fish would probably work great at Queens or Populars, the trouble is that both are predominantly longboard spots, as is Canoes and Threes. You may want to consider Public’s, Kaiser’s, Rockpiles or Ala Moana where the ratio of long to shortboards is more even.

Howzit Foamdust.Whats Barbers Point like nowadays?I learned to surf there in the early sixties…it was the navy beach.Seems like it always had something to ride but never really that good.Any changes???

Boon,

if you’re gonna bring one board, go with the fish. perfect board for the summertime flats. of course, i ride my 5’11" in head-high stuff all the time. a lot of weird looks from guys on their 7’0"s though…have fun!

Hey Cleanlines,

Barber’s Point was given back to the state a few years ago, so now the beach is open to everyone. I’ve only surfed there a few times since it was opened to the public, but like you said, theres usually always something to surf there. It’s a great place to learn to surf and theres a lot of beginners, military surfers and a regular local crew. Its a potpourri of all kinds of surfers that on the whole get along well. Further down the beach westward is a spot called Swabbieland, an outside reef break that can crank big time on a big south or west swell, rather sharky though.

“kinda sharky though”

Is there any place that can possibly be “more sharky” than Barber’s Point?

OK, maybe Kewalo Basin.

How many shark bites from those two places in the last 20 years…I’d bet over 70.
