I’m looking to play around with an old-school style fish shape as an alternative to my longboard when I doing want to lug around the log, or surf something shorter. Any quality shapers reading this in the Southern California area turning these out? Really looking for a traditional retro Lis type of Fish not a modern fish. Any Fish tips or insite is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
www.surfenginez.com or 805-962-3678 up in the Santa Barbara area. Think his name is Steve Brom. Not cheap but about as close to the “Nuuhiwa-era” fish that you’ll ever fine. I believe he was shaping fishes for Dyno back in the Seventies. Skip Frye is a great source if you don’t mind the wait. Don’t think there’s a website and I can’t recall the Ph#. Traditional Lis-style fishes from a guy who was around back in Lis’ experimental days at Sunset Cliffs. Tudor and Tyler both offer “traditional” fishes too. Check out their websites. Good luck.
I second the Steve Brom suggestion. I made that style board a while back and Steve helped me with a fin template, fin placement, and foil/rocker suggestions. A very cool, generous person and the boards I have seen of his are sweet. Look him up, you won’t be sorry. Oh yeah Herb helped too. Thanks, Herb
Thanks guys – Brom’s website is a trip. Those boards look awsome. I’ve got to get up to SB and see in person. I think they carry his stuff at The Beach House. Greg Hunt – Shaping any Fishes? Gene Cooper - Shaping Fishes? Thanks again.
Nomad, I almost forgot. Try www.joeltudor.com or www.tylersurfboards.com. I believe Tyler’s got a bunch of fishes in stock right now. Inventory’s always changing so call. I remember seeing a beautiful(but expensive) red Skip Frye fish back home at Chans Surf. www.chanssurf.com They said that Skip isn’t shaping anymore but I’ve heard different! Check it out. Aloha.
Yeah, the Beach House always has Brom fish. Couple weeks back they had a few used ones as well. Very cool glassing too.
