Fish question

Hi,

This has been asked a million times here before, but here goes:

I’m a 6’1" 220 lb logger who would love to have a fish in my quiver, would one work for me?

I’m thinking 6’5" & 3" thick? Or is that so big & bulky that the basic shape would cease to work?

I get all kinds of input, & I’m confused, so I thought I’d go straight to the source, what (if anything) would work?

Thanks,

John Hintlian

You didn’t say anything about age, ability, type of surf. Yes, it will work. mike

You can go 5" shorter, but keep it 23" wide and at least 3.25 thick.

Most 180lb’ers ride a 5’6" x 22 x 2.55 for reference.

Fish are flat rockered, and sticking the nose will start to become a problem around 6’ long, as it’s meant for small waves, under 7’.

I’m a competent logger, age 40, pretty fit.

220 lbs because I lift some, should eat better I guess.

John,

I’m 5’5" and weigh 138 lbs. I have a 6’4" Lis fish and to me it does’nt feel too long. I also ride a longboard, 7’0" eggs/hybrids and have two modern fishes, 6’4" and 6’6". If you have’nt ridden shortboards for a while, I don’t think a 6 foot something fish would be too short for you…but thats just my opinion. Good luck.

Hey John -

I wouldn’t get hung up on length limitations for a second. For example, Skip Frye has the longboard fish design known as the Fishsimmons. Maybe not technically a “true” fish but who cares? It’s a wide split tail with parallel outline in the tail. It could be ridden with two fins or three fins. Probably a versatile board for a big guy. You could probably go 10 feet or longer. Why not?

Have you seen this beautiful longboard “fish” that Kane Garden puts out called the “Megladon” ? They’re saying it ranges from 9 - 11 feet. Close to a Frye for sure.

Those are sweet, for sure.

I have 3 longboards already, and I’ve always dug on the Frye/Lis fish concept.

It’s looking like 6’0-6’2" at the very most.

So what I’m hearing is the critical dimension is thickness followed by width.

Thanks friends

i asked this question a few weeks ago and got lots of good info. type in bigger fish 6’9 A theres a ton of info on template design and lots of good pics.

My experience is different than LeeD. A six something fish will work well. No sticking. Were talking small wave board. I mostly ride a 6’4". I’m not nearly as big as you. Down to 173 this morning. Probably drop another 10 if I gave up beer. No way. Mike

yeah i have seen that kane garden megaledon board that thing looks pretty sweet. i rode one of there 6’4 fishes this summer and loved it. defiently a good board company if you are looking to buy instead of make.
