Could someone please give me some idea how much rocker to use on a fish . first one i’ve made gonna try to go with 7’4" 22’wide 3 1/4 thick . thinking 1inch tail rocker and 4inches of nose with it “flipping up” the last foot .Also gonna go for the wide /large fish tail .
Now we’re stretching the definition of “fish”.
You are basically making a swallow tail funboard.
Aren’t you using Clark blanks? They have the rocker close already.
There is NO definitive answer to amount of rocker, as it’s personal and full of rider predjudices from rider experience.
More tail rocker…better, quicker, turning.
Less tail rocker…higher trim speed.
More nose kick, more anti pearl, and you can paddle from farther forwards.
Less nose kick, faster paddling speed, might catch nose on late drops.
YOU are the designer of that board…go DESIGN some rocker.
Aloha , I have made my own blank out of EPS thats why I would like Rocker suggestions . I don’t think it’s gonna be a swollow tail . Swallow tails are those small v double pintails . If someone could tell me what Rocker they use I could scale it up if I needed to . Thanks for all your help…
I have been searching through the forum and find this quite interesting. Most people seem to like 3"-4" for the nose and 1"-1.5" for the tail. Seems that fish like to be flatter than most
boards.
cheers Gaz
The bigger you make a fish, the more you have to change from the standard design parameters. Going that big will require some release. either more tail rocker, some convex to the bottom, narrower tail, etc.
“Swallow tails are those small v double pintails”
unless it has a “double pintail” swallow tail with at least 10 inches tip to tip, it’s not what most people would consider a fish…
LeeDD…I just shaped a 5-11" traditional shape fish. I used a recycled longboard that had it’s nose broken off about 20" off the nose. I could only get a 2-5/8" nose rocker and about 3/4" tail rocker out of it…will this be way to flat? should I even bother glassing it?
Ben
I’m also planning a 5’11" fish and I don’t know whether to cut from a 6’2"C or the 6’9"A to get the most appropriate rocker, I’m leaning towards the 6’9"A and cutting down the nose to get the flattest possible rocker - as they are traditionally made from longboard blanks, but will it give me too much tail kick ?
Should be very flat, but fine in smaller, slower moving and not too hollow waves…sorta a specialty slow wave board!
Reason fish and singles work needing less rocker than tris is that WP is way forwards, tail is narrower than nose, and the waves are not as critical as waves you’d ride a 6’4" tri fin in.
Should be a fun small wave board that paddles unreal…might not float unreal, but paddle speed is more important than pure float.
Go for it, specialty boards are always good for your quiver.
My 5’11 mandala canard quad and my 5’8 mandala twin keel have relatively flat rocker and both work well in OH surf…just back from PR where the 5’11 was basically the only board I rode. At a certain spot WELL OH faces coming through, no problem with the board. Paddling out however was a little difficult at a certain spot with drifty currents.
Ben,
I did the exact same thing last summer. I cut up an old longboard for my fish. It was 5’10" and flat. I’m talking flat. Less than 2" in the nose and about 1/2" in the tail. I put a heavy glass job on her and a couple wooden skegs and she flies. The rail can bog if your not use to riding a fish but as soon as i got dialed in i was flying across sections. Go ahead and glass it, you’ll be surprised.

I had a dream about glassing that board…
