Fish Volume

I’ve been reading around on volume, I know some people like more and some less. Surfding made a great point in a previous thread on volume that keeping volume constant between variations on shortboard design works.

If I know (as accurately as computer designing/ handshaping allows) the volume I like for a HP shortboard, could I feasibly take that across to my next fish or is that a step to far? I saw Mike Daniels mention using more volume per unit rider weight for fish/hybrids, is this required by the design or usual for the guys ordering them?

At the moment I’m on a 5’5", 20 1/2"  that I ‘hid’ the volume in the middle of. I didn’t hide the volume very well and want to go a bit sleaker.

So If my shortboard is a nominal 25.5l volume should I go with that?

The guidelines I posted are very general and just reflect the fact that as you go up from hpsb to long boards volume/rider weight ratio increases. The numbers verify well though, if you check a bunch of boards and average it out.

Most people go up a little on fish, but not always. I shape some fish that are right on or only 2-3% over the guy's normal hpsb #. More effecient planing (wider nose and planshape, lower rocker) lets them go in small waves even without a volume increase. Almost always for good surfers.

I love foam, really love it. My boards would suit a surfer 10kg heavier than me, but that’s just what i like. just bring the rails down and you’ll be sweet.
