Fishing Surfboard Stringers

My buddy and I are making fishing surfboards out of EPS foam (1lb.) and will glass it with epoxy. The dimensions will be 13’6 x 48" x 6". We are going to install a outboard motor mount and power it with a 8 hp Yamaha. We cut out the blanks using the rocker template and a hot wire cutter. This is our first EPS and epoxy project. It is hard for us to find a one piece wood that can go 13’6". We are looking for suggestions for the stringers and type of glue to use. If you have any experience making large EPS surfboards or windsurfers with stringers, your expertise is greatly appreciated.

Mahalo,

I go with cedar. Just rip what you want out of a nice straight grain stick.

Why not use epoxy to glue it in?

No Worries, Rich

i used to race power dingies …

dimensions similar to what you mentioned …

12’ x 48" x 4" they were like giant surfboards with a bow cover , so you had protection when you hit low trees or had to duck dive them at speed …

crazy sport , racing down rivers , dealing with fallen trees , submerged logs , rocks , waterfalls and rapids , or getting lost in open swampland , finding out you took a wrong turn , and having to carry your boat overland to get back to the main channel …

just with a 10 hp motor speeds of up to 85 kmh …

now thats fast when your doing hairpin bends and your looking at a fallen tree or a bunch of gnarly obstacles , then looking for an escape plan , with about 3 seconds left till impact …

anyway , we built the boats with eps , we didnt run stringers the full length , but just in the back half , out of solid 12mm or 9mm ply these then emerged out of the deck at the rear and became the main support for the transom …

we ran small sides as well , this also gave structural integrity lengthways …

i would show a photo , but at the moment im in the middle of a move and there in the bottom of a box somewhere …

plywood and epoxy resin as glue …

hey check these …

my old racing buddy , i used to decky , the guy on the motor was my race partner …

he races with his son now (in this photo)

he never ever followed my lead , if i gave an instruction to slow down , because there was some suspicious obstacle coming , he always ignored me , and just kept it flat …

after doing this for a number of years , and having some unbelievable lucky escapes and some very spectacular , james bond style crashes , i decided it was a bit on the dangerous side , as some of the following pictures show , you can see why i decided to quit this sport …

a few more

when i would tell people stories related to racing , jumping rocks , logs , launching off waterfalls , doing reos off river banks , hitting obstacles that hard and getting so much air that we once got our boat stuck in a tree and couldnt reach it , hitting a section of river bank in last place , then unknowingly getting air into the bush , then flying back down and realising the river had done a loop , we just flew out of the bush in first place…

crew would listen , but i knew they didnt believe me …

one race is 250 kms long , and all the most amazing obstacles are hidden deep in the wilderness where a camera man couldnt get to , unless a competitor took one , but then they wouldnt be racing …

i never forget the look on this guys face once …

they were in first place , we were last , we took a wrong turn , hit a bank , then flew up onto wet grass and bush , we couldnt stop coz we were skidding on scrub , i pulled to the left then right narrowly missing huge trees and rocks , then we bust through some loose soft trees like we were leaving the bat cave , only to realise were about to launch off the river bank and back into the river …

just as we burst out and air drop back into the water i look to the left and see the guys in first place coming around the bend , we almost collided …

he must have freaked as we just launched out of the bush right in front of them and into first place …

so getting back to construction …

these are just eps and glassed with epoxy resin and fibreglass …

we done some vacuum bagged ones , but they are so light they only last a season if your lucky , sometimes not even one race …

a whole boat and motor could be as light as 60 kg …

quite often , you find yourself having to manhandle to boat over or around some heavy sections …

so lightness helped , plus we used them like a giant surfboard , the heavy boats just didnt respond quick enough …

you could get em from rail to rail and negotiate some stupidly tight sections …

ok that was fun reliving that stuff …

Wow! That looks like fun but nuts! Thanks for your hints.
