Five fins evolved from Twinzer

I was lucky enough to be able to speak with Wil Jobson last night. After a fair amount of time mostly away from surfing and shaping to deal with family issues, he is coming back, and his Twinzer has re-shaped its fins and grown a center fin. (Don’t even know if the five fin has a name yet, maybe the neomorph). Many other complexities in the design as well, including the primary rail fins being twisted so the tips are parallel to the stringer, whereas the bases are toed-in (a la Halcyon). The rails are hard and tucked and even stepped in the tail, and the bottom contours were a single to double to four barrel channels at the very tail. It was pretty neat to talk to such an innovator for so long, I’ll see if I can get some pics of the five fin setup soon. The fin templates are all different, and he claims it doesn’t even ride that much like a Twinzer.

Hey Blakestah,

I was over at Fiberglass Santa Cruz on Friday and the owner told me about Wil comming to California for a while. I’m sure surfers will be lined up to talk to him and get him to shape them boards. I’ll be in the line somewhere for a chat and want to show him my new board for sure. He has a reputation of being a most innovative fellow.

From the sound of his new five fin creation with channels it sound a pretty tracky set-up. I’ll be anxious to see the foil on his fins and discuss how best to incorporate the twist. It appears that Scott Wilhelmi and I not alone in championing the idea. I’m not surprized.

Drop me an email will ya Blakestah? By the way that orange fin you post a photo of on the Trace #3 thread looks sweet – Is it epoxy? It looks like you cut the fin off an orca and made a mold of it or at least traced the outline. The color is grand and it’s a very powerful looking template; a perfect one for your rotating fin system IMHO.

Wow, very cool to hear what Wil is up to… I can’t wait to see that set up as I am way into bonzers and twinzers big time. I have a set up that I have been working on that is a morphed combo of the two… Yes! thanks Blakestah

The twinser is such a good design… awesome creation. Took a real understanding of hydrodynamics to create such a thing. Jobson stands out as a beacon of forward thought in a world of, “success based on the embrace of mediocrity.” Absolutely incredible that the twinser was panned by the “design leaders” of the time.
