fixing a Costco foamie

Hello, I’m a new user here.  I have looked around, and to the best of my knowledge, no one has asked this question before.  If someone has, and I am asking something again, I apologize and would love to have a link to that thread.

The questoin…  I have a cosco foamie.  Its in good shape, but the soft top part and the bottom are starting to peel apart at the nose after years of abuse.  It wasen’t even mine originally, but I ended up with it, so its very old and has been surfed over many a sharp rock.  What I wish to know, is whether I should A) try to glue it back together with some 5 minute epoxy  or B) finish peeling off the soft top and the bottom to expose that closed foam interior and glass it into a new cloased foam board?  The closed cell foam is in good shape.

Of the options that I presented, I like B the best, but will do A if people think that B is a dumb idea.

I do understand that the cosco foamie is not a very popular board, but I am very very very hesitant to add to the ever growing land fills, so if I can save the board I will.   BUT, if I can make a new board, well…  Besides, that is my long board, everything I shape is short and small.  I don’t know that I’ll ever shape a long board from scratch, restore one yes, but from scratch prolly not.

Any suggestoins are welcome, and please help.

Go to Home Depot, and get some Urethane Caulk.  Spread it where you want, and hold it in place with a weight.  Don’t spend more than $10, because the board isn’t worth it.

The five minute epoxy works. glue it then clamp it or weight it down.

If its one of those waverunner surfboards, Ive tried repurposing one for a blank but it became too tedious of a job. Both top and bottom skin were extemely hard to peel off. Plus youre left with six holes in the tail from the fins all big enough to shove your pinky in it. The blank ends up being around 8x21x2 1/2 depending how much of the foam you shredded trying to get the skin off. Good Luck!

Use it as a bodyboard now. Invest in a local handshape.

Brian - not to change the subject, but do you guys sell those large plastic threaded screws used for attaching leashes and fins on sponge boards?  Or know where I could get one?

It is a waverunner board.  Thanks for perspective on repurposing one as a blank, that really was my question.  Did you end up completing a board using the inside of the foamie?  If so, do you have pictures?

Nope, ended up throwing away the entire blank. But I was able to shape a 7’8"x21x2 1/2 triple stringer out of it. And no pictures of that project, started off as an experiment, ended up as trash. But i did keep the fins and made a few quad fin waverunners. I read a post recently by huck, he deskinned an ecoslab foam board for his 7’4" square tail. You could ask him for more advice. Watch out for dogs;)

Bottom line: Just do it and post your results. If youre not happy with it, I strongly suggest you invest in a proper longboard. Completly different ride and level of stokeness

Huck,

Try ebodyboarding.com for all your plastic screws, plates, and fins

Thanks for the photos man…  I think that I’m just gonna glue it back together.  Save my time and cash for something more rewarding, like a fresh blank.  It was a wild hair that I’m glad was pulled before I got further into ripping up the board.  … just repair.  The tripple stringer really does make it tempting to screw with tho…

Throw the F--ing thing in the trash!

I was told by the internet to use a hot glue gun and a brick.  Epoxy might be too stiff.

I used an eco-tech blank, a foam surfboard blank made by the (now defunct) eco-tech brand.  It was an old blank, but not deskinned, other than the manufacturing skin produced in the foam molding process.

The 5 minute epoxy worked great!!  No problems, no worries.

Hey waterwise! Got an old costco waverunner so I decided to re visit the idea of using it as a blank. The soft top skin was coming off from both ends so i just ripped it off with no tools. the bottom also ripped off very easy. I just needed to sand off a bunch of the leftover crap. making a simster inspired board with lots of volume in the tail.

Oh awesome.  Repurposing at its best.  Have you done anything with it since taking the soft parts off?  I know that eventually mine is gonna look like that, it would be rewarding to know that it dosn’t need to go in the trash can.

Someone mentioned that epoxy was too stiff, they were correct.  The nose came undone again, this time I used liquid nails and clamped it for 2 days.  Taking a while to dry completely, but it seems to me to be holding very tight for now.  I’ll update if it fails and announce it’s disposal.

How did that modification you did to your Costco board work? I was thinking of doing something similar to mine. Also, what did you use to seal the foam after you cut out the swallow tail?

After about two months, liquid nails failed also.  Nowadays, I use aluminum tape.  It’s a stop-gap measure, but in case anyone gaf the tape holds up well in marine water.  Much much better than duct tape.

@theophilus: what did you end up doing with that soft-top blank?
