Fixing a snapped surftech

Haven’t posted in a while, I recently went over to the darkside and got a surtech thinking it would be durable, I snapped it a week later padling out at waist high sandspit.

It is snapped just infront of the tracktion pad, and .pretty delamed on the bottom, what materials do I need to fix it ?

thanks

check this link, loads of good ideas

succes!

What he said: I'd follow the instructions given on http://www.boardlady.com/snap.htm to the letter.

Also, there's a lot on http://www.boardlady.com/repairmenu.htm -  all that I have seen is good information. I especially like the page on tools, not least because so many are the identical items to what are in my tool collection or very close equivalents.

When you read through all that, take notes and jot down questions. For instance, her setup is for doing production, a lot of repairs over a fair length of time. There's some things you can get away with for just doing one or two repairs, there's some you can't.

Then, come on back with the questions and ask away.

Does it look like the blank was glued together from two pieces at the spot where it broke?  Just curious.

You can fix it like the Board lady suggests or if it is a clean break just get some epoxy, microballoons, and glass.

Mix up the epoxy with the microballoons to make a paste glue it back together strait. Then sand-smooth it out and seal it up and

glass  it like a normal break with overlapping patches. Sanding coat and your good to go. I have fixed many Surftech’s this way and never had a problem with the repair.

Don’t over think it, just use epoxy and remember a little extra weight in the tail of a corky Surftech can be an improvement.

Thanks for the info

would it be possible to just use normal(bondo) resin on the board ?

If your on about polyester then NO!!!!

It'll be snap crackle pop bye-bye board!

You need epoxy resin, glass cloth and a filler like micro balloons for a repair like that. The instructions on the board lady site have it down to a 'T'

Yeah, I know I need cloth and qcell , I was just wondering if It needs to be epoxy resin

Well, yeah.

You see, if you take polyester resin ( which uses styrene as a thinner ) and put it to polystyrene foam ( like you get in the core of a surftech) then the foam softens, big-time. Think 'marshmallow fluff'. 'Like dissolves like' you see.

Now, epoxy isn't chemically like styrene, so you can, should and have to use it with styrene foam.

Board Lady...yes...

Stingray backyard hack...here's the link.... http://www2.swaylocks.com/node/1026491     use epoxy resin.

The photos are gone...let's see what I can find....

Use epoxy resin. Go out 10 to 12 inches on each side. I used auto body filler (Bondo) under the cloth but it's not a good idea. I hope you clicked the link...Here's the photos...The paint job is done with Rattle Cans...aka Spray Bomb!

Look close...

you can do it!

...

Use epoxy!  Bondo is polyester resin dont use on EPS…  Im in Goleta, I have epoxy, glass and cabosil and my own broken EPS board to fix… we could do two at a time???

you said you broke it at sandspit… assuming you are local, send me a PM and we can work something out

Exhibit A . Poly v’s eps  There can be only one winner and it isn’t the eps. MELTDOWN!!!
