Fixing my leash on pin hole longboard

Hi - sorry - a beginners question here. Longboard has arrived today but noticed it has a small round hole instead of the usual leash plug....how do I fit the leash on to this? I take it I have to string somethng through the hole and tie on? Any right or wrongs before I damage it?

Suppose my main question is how long should the loop stick out of the board for the leash to tie on - is the only real consideration to ensure the railsaver does its job.

Thanks

Yes, you only need enough to attach a railsaver. Get some tie line that’s thin enough to stuff through the hole. Tie a knot in it, as illustrated by this photo. Stuff the loop end through the hole with a thin screwdriver. Snip off any excess at the knot so you don’t have a lot of material in the finbox.

This stuff is actually stage riggers tie line. It’s what was handy so I could demonstrate the knot. You’ll want something a bit thinner.

Thanks Sammy.

Just got me thinking....are there any benefits to the pin hole type design over the usual plugs you get these days or are the small pin holes just more of a traditional "old school style" approach?

There’s really nothing “old school” about the hole through the box idea. Some people did a crude version before plugs appeared as standard issue. But, the type you have is actually newer than a leash plug.

The reason long boards use that setup is many feel it is stronger than a plug. The box acts as a structural part of the leash attachment. Easier to yank a plug out of the deck than yank the box through it.

Use a paper clip, straighten one end slide the other hooked end through the hole, top of board, slide loop over paper clip, pull loop thru board. Sometimes have to use tighter/smaller size string. Make sure you can not pull knot thru board you are good to go.

That's interesting......I'd never seen the small holes on board so just assumed it was an old school kind of thing.....agree that it would be harder to yank the box out!!! Suppose you have to hope the string holding the leash works well.
