Fixing Polyester Delam With Epoxy

I fixed my poly Ksmall with UV epoxy 3 months ago . . . I found out my sand resin had gone bad (it was this amber color with chunks)

Working fine.

thanks for the response

i guess my original post didn’t show up. i found lots of info in the archives about ding repair with epoxy on PU/PE boards but i didn’t come up with anything about fixing a delam? i have a delam on a 9’4" PU/PE longboard and i am wondering if the drill/cut a hole, fill with resin to bond, put down wax paper, add weight to create bond method will work by using 5 minute epoxy? i’m having problems getting polyester resin to kick when it’s on average - 20 degrees celcius and in a cold damp basement. any thoughts on the 5 min epoxy? thanks.

Polyester doesn’t like to work under 55 degrees F if I recall correctly, so the temperature isn’t your problem, I imagine it’s trapped water that’s causing the cure failure and in that temperature the board will take forever to dry out unless you open it up to let more air get at it or hit it with a hair dryer, but do it slowly, too much heat will cause more delamination (the evaporating water will get trapped under the glass and separate it from the foam).

And check the epoxy, most of the 5 minute stuff isn’t water proof.

where in the north east do you live I live in MA and have a heated glassing room if you are near by your more than welcom to use it

You’d need to use an epoxy that is UV stable, and preferably also clear. Most five minute epoxy is neither.

nat, thank you for the offer but i am in nova scotia.

there is a local shaper here that i know could do the job but it’s not a large delam and i am trying to think of an easy fix. i have fixed delams in the past on other boards with polyester resin from the hardware stores (looks brown) which has held up fine over the years.

the area of delam is dry and i haven’t tried anything yet, i was just wondering about the 5 minute epoxy where the stuff i have dries clear on other ding repairs. just thought that if it would work it would be a little more cosmetically appealing but in the end i don’t really care.

so the 5 min epoxy won’t work eh? thanks for the responses.

DON’T DRINK THE BROWN RESIN!

If you REALLY wanted to use 5 minute epoxy, you could paint over it to protect it against UV (this is why Surftechs used to be painted).

I personally prefer surfboard specific resins for clarity (and UV stability for epoxy).
