fixing "The Ding"

Aloha, I just finished shaping my first board, and after feeling totally proud of my piece of art, it accidently got knocked off the rack. So…now the once clean rail has a HUGE (like 3/4"+) gouge in it. What should I do? Should I fill it in, then glass the entire board? Or glass the board, then fill in the gouge? Or what? I’m totally new to this whole thing, so any thoughts would be much appreciated. Mahalo!

If the gouge is around an inch deep, and not too long, you can fill it with lightwieght spackel. fill the hole flush ,let it dry for a day, then glass it.If the boards clear,it won’t show,if it’s an airbrush,or tint it will show big time. You can get the spackel at any hardware store.goodluck!! aloha weez…

Using advice from Jim Phillips and tips from Herb I was able to salvage a couple of blanks that came delivered complete with fork lift holes. I shaped as ususal, ignoring the fact that I could see my feet through the deck in one instance. Mix up a a batch of lam resin with large ammounts of plain old table sugar in it, make a heavy, thick paste and catalyze as normal. Fill the holes and BEFORE it gels try to clean up and level out the finished surface.(if you wait until it hardens you will have a hard time grinding it down without scarring the foam around the repair). It worked great and dries with a similar texture to the foam itself. Tom S.
