These last 3-4 days seem like the longest flat spell in many many months in So. Cal.,ie., really almost no waves that even a proneman on a 10’ board might enjoy. It has been a relief to not somehow feel obligated to go surfing. Feeling rested and ready for some knee high plus waves!! Obviously addicted, Roger
the local lakes have more swell!
Did you go to Mex. over the holidays? ? Donde?
Diablo Canyon Forecast… SWELL: Today’s 1 to 2 foot northwesterly (285 degrees) swell (with an 8-14 second period) will decrease to less than 1 foot tonight. Note: Tonight’s wave height measurement could be the lowest significant swell height ever recorded at the Diablo Canyon Ocean Lab.
Looks like a good time to get some deep water rock codding in. -Jay
Ah, but you really should been here today. While driving north on 101 at about 4:30 this evening, I stopped at Ponto to check out the surf (even though I couldn’t go surfing), and it was three foot and perfect. I cannot believe how glassy it was. The glassiest surf I have seen in a long time. The water was green, the air had a strange, light cloud coverage, a real East Coast feel to it, including the chill. It would have been perfect for a 10 foot noserider. That place seems to really pick up the smallest of swells. Can’t knock the Army Corp of Engineers too much. That place was the joke of Carlsbad/Leucadia before they put in those jetties. Now it’s arguably the best spot south of Tamarack and North of Swamis. Well, on second thought, Tamarack was ruined by the dredging last spring, and still hasn’t healed. I’ll take small beaches and exposed reef over big beaches and covered reef anyday. DOH!
Speaking of East Coast feel… it’s cold and flat here in Jersey, and not much relief in sight, been this way for a week +
Maybe George Bush had all the waves destroyed to protect us from terrorists sneaking in behind them??
Always lookin’ out, that’s dubya.
As I recall we had a flat spell like this last year somewhere around this time. Full moon in the western sky, bits and pieces of clouds making excellent sunrises, and I had a nice mat I was itching to keep riding. We had Santa Anas that were warm, so somewhere in there I was going every morning around 5 a.m. in full moonlight only to find total flatness. Wound up sitting in the car hours before legal parking hours along the old Rincon Highway watching moonlight on the water, windows open, listening to KTYD occasionally play some diamond from various eras in an off-hour flash of FM past. Peace on Earth, my friends. Sometimes it’s about riding waves that aren’t even there. Check this photo out…(haven’t figured how to post 'em yet) http://www.vagabondsurf.com/SunRise.html
cool shot if using a pc… right click on the picture. this brings up a box - click on ‘properties’ @ the bottom. A box comes up and in the middle it has the URL of the picture. Highlight it and copy it (Ctrl C). Then paste it in the “Optional Image URL” box on the swaylock message.
Thanks Richard. Nothing like new temptations for a new year!
That’s definitely one way to appreciate a flat spell. Nice thing is that the sun comes up over the water here, so if there’s no go on dawn patrol, at least you get the sunrise to check out.
Try being in NY, flat and forcasting the longest cold spell in 10 years no day for the next to weeks over 25degrees. Deffinetly bring down that water temp. with a god awful quickness. The forecast for a long cold spell also means a long flat spell. East Coast Rules.
hang on folks-I just saw an outside set that I SWEAR was pushing 1’-break out the guns!!!
What’s a flat spell…???.. Is it the 10 seconds between the waves we constantly have up here…???.. http://www.hollowsurfboards.com
That hurts. only on the Right Coast can a 3 foot day create the biggest stoke you’ve had in a month. Gathering materials to shape my own boards is the ONLY stoke I’ve had in a while…though I have to admit it’s a great feeling, and I haven’t even started.
