How cool is it to be able to make a board for your daughter? She wants a board with colored flowers. I’ve seen some of the new boards in the shops with large airbrush flowers. How is that done? Can I just cut out flexible (pvc sheet?) template and spray?
Greg
I recently had a board shaped for my wife and she wanted “girlie”, but not hibiscus… Grabbed a daisey from the garden, scanned it and played with the colors in photoshop/ printed to rice-paper. worked pretty well.

Very nice. She has her heart set on those giant hibiscus sort of in outline view. Maybe I could copy free hand an outline on to a sheet of plastic?
Greg,
Before doing a laminate or stencil, maybe try giving it go free hand? I don’t have an artistic bone in my body but after just a couple of practice tries, I was drawing hibiscus flowers that were coming out pretty darn good. They beauty in drawing them is that nature is not perfect and the minor imperfections can actually add a more real looking affect.
I’m sure you’ll be pouring your heart into this project. How old is she?

Howzit Greg, A lot of surf shops carry flower stickers and I actually can get them at Wal-Mart here on Kauai. Buy one, scan it , make any color and size changes you want then print on rice paper and apply when board is glassed. It’s really simple and I do it all the time. Aloha, Kokua
i recall someone on here doing a really nice airbrush job with a big hibiscus not too long ago. it was on a mini-longboard / egg shape between 7’0" and 7’6", i believe. anyhow, he cut out a big hibiscus on contact paper and laid it on the deck of the board, gave it a few coats of orange airbrush, and then removed the hibiscus paper and gave it a few more. the result was a 2-tone orange deck with 2 big hibiscus flowers a lighter shade than the rest of the deck…IT LOOKED GREAT!!! might be worth a shot…
Yeah, that was a nice one…It was Shipman who did that, although I’m not sure of he did the glassing himself or not…Shoot him a PM.
FoamE-Z has these in various colors. Or maybe you could just blow up this image.
Google image search is a wonderful thing.
Geez, ya’ll are great. I should have asked you to come over and just do it for me.
OK, I’m going to try the contact paper trick.
Thanks to all.
Greg- check out stencilrevolution.com for all sorts of stencil ideas. This is especially a good site if your daughter wants a picture of Subcomendante Marcos on her board:).
Good luck and have fun!

That someone is me. … and that is exactly how I did it. http://www.swaylocks.com/resources/detail_page.cgi?ID=926 I have done some of these in other colors to. I have a main template that I hand drew, I then trace that on to the contact paper. it’s very simple after you have a good drawing/template to work from. good luck.
Thanks for posting the link Ben - I remember thinking that was a sweet design when you first posted it. You’re really into the oranges, aren’t you? You’ve got some sweet shapes, cuz. Really liked the 6’5 orange tasty fish as well…

waxfoot, Thanks,…Orange is the new black…I think I am on a blue kick now.
Sweet!! Would love to see that blue board posted in the resource section. I dig your shapes - they look really clean.
I swear I saw something on a t-shirt recently that said pink was the new black though…
You’re definitely getting some mileage out of that hibiscus design. I dig it. Are you re-using the same stencil, or do you cut a new one each time? I like each one that I’ve seen pictures of. White with coloured background had nice crisp lines. Background spray, then peel and re-spray looked killer too. More subtle, yet still crisp. Any suggestions on how to make the flower a different colour? Say, a blue background with orange flower? I’m guessing you’d have your flower stencil down first and spray the background, then you’d have to mask off the background so you could spray the flower… You would probably pull some paint up from the mask though… As well as have to maybe outline the flower in black to cover the overspray/bring out the solid contrast… Hmmm… suggestions?

Just noticed that the resin swirl board was a bonzer - how does that one ride? Didn’t see it on the first look as I was focussed on the blue board and the bonzer fins were clear so I looked right through them…
I cut a new one out for each board. the master pattern/template is on a large sheet of white paper. I use a large glass door as light table. I place the contact paper on top of the pattern then trace/copy. Haven’t tried doing two different colors yet…
The bonzer is my own personal board but haven’t ridden yet. it’s still curing…those semi-clear bonzer fins are hard to see with all the abstract colors going on…
