FOAM VS. BALSA

Can we talk about materials now?

hehehe - OK, all right.  I like wood (hws) over foam because of aesthetics and ding resistance.  Weight is a bit of an issue, but not a deal breaker.  My 6'8" is heavy (on land) at 17 lbs., but doesn't feel heavy in the water.  I haven't tried plywood for skin, but did use it for ribs / stringer.  I think I'm gonna try it for a skin on my next boards.

I haven't used esp foam yet - but I think I'll be ordering a up fish blank here real soon (oh yeah, that pu foam!).  Shoot me a pm with instructions.  I plan on marrying it with wood rails and some wood veneer aka Ken's Nuuhiwa retrofish - maybe just a little thicker veneer actually "let-in" to the blank.  Kind of a half-breed / hybrid compsand kinda thing,  Then epoxy resin and s-glass.  Surfding says epoxy is OK, maybe I'll try a small sample to be sure.

LIke hydrosteam, I'm here to listen and learn, too!

I just realized that most surfboards have a foam, wood, or hollow core. In boat building these cores are what we would be calling the skins on a composite sandwich board.

Seems like we use a variety of foams, pu eps, xps, maybe in some cases corecell or divinycell (kiteboards, towboards), then there are the wood boards, paulownia, balsa, redwood, agave, finally the hollow boards with or without an internal frame.

My earlier comments about the materials used were only as a part of the skin that wraps around a foam core of either PU (basic surfboard blank), EPS (construction grade insulation up to 2lb or Marko surfblanks) or XPS (blue dow).

PS, This message was typed with only 2 fingers.

Epoxy can go on all kinds of different foam

I have made a few PU/Epoxy boards that are actually better. In a production shop like we have Polyester is way cheaper other wise we would just use Epoxy on PU.

Welcome back Roy…

hey huie i tihnk you mistook shark country he was actually on your side

btw huie has gotten heaps of shit for typing in caps but has to so he can read it lol

This makes good sense to me…

There’s an actuall scientific backing to CAPS vs lower case thing. Apparently when one reads a word, the brain recogises the entire word, as opposed to each individuall letter. Now we’re all used to reading in lower case where capital letters are only used to indicate either a beggining of a sentance, names etc. So when you see an all caps word…the brain takes longer to recognise the new “shape” of the word…and hence it is harder to read.

THE ALL CAP THING… ugh, esp. in that font, hurts my eyes… Say what you will, but it is easier to read “normal”/regular writing.

Paul may be on to something here. I spent a little time compareing sentence structure and grammer between  hydrostreams second post and Roys posts on Grain. Guess what . As I think you know. Of course you know . This is clearly not the case. These are sentences that you will see on Roys postings on Grain. Not only that Roy , Kayu, and Huck are haveing it out over there. It could be that Roy is back!!! In any case I did have something to say about balsa as a core material. But now I will just pass on that!!

“Woooooo woooo… Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding…”

who is better, shooter mcgavvin, or pepper brooke?
