Just so happened to see an old friend of mine who lives up the street the other day…Started talkin story, happened to glance over underneath his house. Thought I saw what was a swallow tail sticking out from a pile of dirt. Upon further inspection and digging, it turned out to a 6’4" swallow tail Gabe Garduque had made for me back in 1977, before he went on to ghost shape for Ben Aipa and HIC. I had forgotten about leaving the board there some 20 yrs ago and was stoked to see it was in decent condition. Plan on getting it in seaworthy condition to see how it rides…
Thats pretty cool! Keep us posted.>>> Just so happened to see an old friend of mine who lives up the street the > other day…Started talkin story, happened to glance over underneath his > house. Hey, “Foamdust”…I got a pretty good story along (kinda) similar lines. A friend of mine found his VERY FIRST SURFBOARD…sitting in the used racks at a florida surfshop (he’s from N.Y.)…the thing was in almost the same condition as when he had - reluctantly - sold it to go to school, some 26 years ago! (YES, he did buy it!). Just goes to show you…you never know when your past will come back to greet you. T. (p.s…any of you ever saw your “old gals” in the line-up? felt all nostalgic, yeah?!).
I guess I’d better start scrounging the used board racks for that old 6’8" Clyde Beatty I sold back in 79. What a mistake!
speaking of finding old boards… my dad just found out that his first board (a 9’8 Rick Hotdogger model from 1965) is now sitting at the side of some community pool in Colorado (of all places). He bought the board when he was 18 in Manhattan Beach, and now it’s in Colorado… strange how that works. Anyway, we’re working on getting it back.
Another “found” story. A friend of mine found a board that he missed out on buying way back. The board: cherry condition 9’6" Surfboards Hawaii Stylist II (pintail).Yellow resin tint bottom, clear deck with triple wedge stringer, plastic boxed fin. One of his running buddies in high school came up with the $150. to buy it used before he could. This kid surfed it maybe one summer and slid it under his bed in his parents house. Paul was out on a job and ran into the kid’s father 30+ years later. They started talking about the son and what he wat up to, was he still surfing? What happend to the board? Still under the bed upstairs! “Come on over sometime and you can have it”. He gave him the $150.00 anyway and now he’s got that special board that was out of reach back then. While I would sometimes kill to find my old Caster that I let go for too little $… I know exactly where my first-ever board is. I bought it used for $60 and had surfed it for a few years (7’ Bunger winger single - 1970 vintage) and sold it to a friend for $60. They intended to make a windsurfer out of it. They never did make the windsurfer and eventually gave me back the board and would not take the money back (?). The board was pretty beat up and I recently skinned it for the blank… which is - ever so slowly - being made into a 6’8" swallow/fish twin. The original board was about 4" thick. I hear the board collectors groaning in the background… I did run the board by the original shaper Charlie Bunger a while back. His only comment - ‘that board is a real klunker!’.>>> Another “found” story. A friend of mine found a board that he > missed out on buying way back.
