frayed laps

just wondering what the trick is for unfrayed laps. I’ve tried different tecniques and still it wants to fray. the scissors I have are cheap, but seem to cut the cloth o.k. Thanks for any info.

If it’s fraying on cut ,then you need to buy/get sharper sissors.Herb

they seem to cut o.k. the laps fray almost as soon as I wet them out. Have you ever used electric scissors?

they are call Dritz shears and should be under the Resources section somewhere. just get a good pair of shears…fiberglasssupply.com has some good ones.

Try not to overwork the overlap cloth. Some fraying is normal but overworking can make it worse. Be gentle when wetting the overlap and also when doing your intial tuck.

Fraying is part of it…just the weight of the resin as it runs down the lap during wet out will cause strings to hang.Try tucking the laps with a sidewise motion {start from center and work to each end)…this lets the strings go kinda lengthwise.Like Greg said don;t over sgueegee the resin. Its hard to explain but sometimes less is best. thanks for the info. practice, practice, practice.
