Wow it is so strange seeing one of my boards posted on Craig’s List that I didn’t post.I guess all boards get re-sold eventually.I am a hobbyist and average about a board a month. Most of the boards are for friends and family. In fact I give away most of my boards for Christmas or birthday presents. This one I made late last year and sold it on CL.I just want to share the passion one homemade board at a time.
Yes, it’s happened to me a couple of times. Craigs list and Ebay. It’s alway freaky especially when, same as you, I don’t build that many. One came up on Craigslist from the North Shore a while back. The guy found out his wife was having twins and he had to liquidate some possesions.
I almost bought one back on Ebay. It was in California and then I thought, “What? Am I crazy”. A guy in Pennsylvania bought it and he brought it here to Florida in December and we went surfing. I had sold it to a guy in Virginia originally right after I had brought it back from a trip to Hawaii about 7 or 8 years ago.
Not only are your boards sold on CL and Ebay, but they travel the country. BTW, I love those blue Tahitian print shorts I got from you. Those are my favorite pair now. I just added a small cord to hold my keys. They are so comfortable and classic!
In Australia we used to have these pawn shops called Cash Converters, I was quite disheartened when someone rang me up and said one of my boards was in there…and it was selling for more than what I had sold it to the mull pig in the first place.
Slightly similar…I once loaned some records to a (so-called) friend. Never got them back. Some years later, I found them in a used record store. Pissed me off.
Have'nt seen any of my boards on craigslist but did see one in the used board rack as I drove past Surf N Sea in Haleiwa a couple years back. Can't really blame my friend for selling it, it did'nt really end up being what he wanted, but to my defense, the blank he gave me had a strange rocker. To his credit he did ride it for a while. I also came upon a guy with a board I shaped close to 20 yrs ago for another friend. It was actually in decent shape for its age. Kinda wished I had offered to buy it from him for sentimental reasons.
the journeys boards go on is very interesting, wish boards could talk or better still, have a little dvd to show you what they been up to..... how cool are boards ? a FUNctional piece of art that gives joy in the waters around the planet, that go from one surfer to the next, riding many different waves and you never know where they'll end up, some in the tip, some in pawn shops and some are stripped down and get another shot at life as a reshape....very cool stuff indeed.....
Hey Prid, You have given me a new persective on this topic. It's a better way of viewing our shapes. I've had a couple of buddies have me shape a blank for them (for nothing, friend deal) only to find out they sold them for profit. I guess I'm like Uncle D, attached to what I make. Hope I will always be. It is the attachment that makes you produce a well made board.
Ps. It is great to see you have passed this love to your kids. Must be very satisfying.
Hey Uncle D you know what’s funny? I see one of my boards on Ebay or Craig’s list and like you I go, “Why would the guy sell that board?” when that’s exactly what I did or I would still have the board.
I don’t mind seeing my old boards being re-sold. I’d rather see that than having them a) sit in a garage unused, or b) worse yet, hung on a wall somewhere.
Yup, reappearances happen. A couple years ago (say 2008) an acquaintance alerted me to a board with my sig on ebay. I checked it out and sure enough it was one of mine from 1975 or so - resurfacing (pun intended) after 33 years. I built to last, what can I say (except that the guy I sold it to probably never used it, then garaged it most of that time). I got in touch with the ebay seller and confirmed the details. Forget the eventual selling price, but was not offended, after all that time.
I guess instead of asking why I sold the board, I should ask why I built the board. In this case, I had a extra 10-4 blank that I wanted to play with. I was sitting on the can doing my morning thing reading the Surfer Journal and the idea of an orange tint deck in-lay with white bottom and rails hit me. It was stuck in my head and I had to build it. I had fun building the board and when I was done, another idea came up so I sold the board to finance the next project. As long as I am moving boards out, my wife doesn't mind. She hates it when my board count exceeds my rack space. I have rack space for about 17 boards now and I have room for one more personnal board.. In my shapping room and storage shack, I have 11 un-shaped blanks and one shaped blank ready for glassing. I am in the middle of coaching water polo in the evening, so my board productivity is very slow and mostly limited to the weekends. Looks like I might have to place a few more ads on Craig's List to free up some rack space myself. This hobby is too addictive!
This is too funny. Now I see one of my first SUP boards that I made about four years ago on Craig's List. My boards are now called Uncle D boards! http://honolulu.craigslist.org/oah/spo/2294213395.html This was a first generation SUP EPS/epoxy board that I sold with paddle I made for $800.
