Hi Rhino

spectacular work! Thanks for being gracious enough to display the instructions, I hope that you’ll recieve your good karma sooner rather than later.

I have a questions about the rocker jig: when making the rocker template, do you need to adjust for the width of the batons and the plywood sheet in order to get the final product? I imagine the sum of those two things must be close to one inch.

Sincerely

David Ryan

Howzit David?

Thanks for the complement,

For the rocker jig, just place your batons so that they are flush with both walls of the jig and come right to the top (not sitting on top of the jig, but rather in the inside pinned against the walls.)

Then, nail your 1/8" ply over the whole jig (on top of the jig’s walls and batons). I did not worry about the ply altering the rocker because an 1/8" is not that big of a deal.

If you wished to compensate for the ply thickness you can alter your rocker very slightly. I would not recomend setting the batons 1/8" below the walls of the jig to compensate though, because those walls ensure the ply and batons are laying level.

Have you began your project yet?

Cheers.

-Austin

(I just noticed I said 3/8" ply instead of 1/8" should be used for the jig in the orgional post. 1/8" is fine, 3/8" is proably overkill and unfunctionable.)

Im trying to make this board as a senior project for High School, and i was wondering if i could ask you some questions.

About how long did it take you to make this?

How many hours did you put in?

And is it for riding or display because a lot of people are telling me that Balsa boards are for display now a days?

I made this board my senior year of highschool as well. I worked on it for about 8hrs a week for a full semester then finished it up at home. I have maybe about 80 hrs total invested in to it & I’ve bee riding this board lots since I built it. It’s surfed in waves from kee to 11+ feet and is pretty much a soul board. I mostly like doing big bottom turns on it, mild ‘slow mo’ cutbacks as i call them and likes getting bareled in fast clean waves.

-Three years and counting without a single pressure ding!..a few fin chops though.

Two other high school students in Japan and Canada have just built this board and are now in the process of glassing them! Go for it! & feel free to post questions.

Cheers.

Thanks man. I Will. I probably start laying everything out this week and start to get my money in order for everything.

Great looking board and a great write up as well. excellent addition to the sways library, should go right up there with Berts compsand thread. congrats.

Yeew. Looks awesome. well done

I wonder what Roy has to say about this?

The guy removed the plans from ebay & I have asked him to donate the proceeds to SWAYS.

Another , ‘Earn money $$ from home stuffing envelopes’, job down the drain.

Can you paint the board, or do you not recommend that? It won’t be the whole board, but it will be a side

Yeah, you could paint it. I like the aesthetics of natural wood grain, so I choose not to paint any of it. If you go on Roys websight http://www.olosurfer.com/olo_surfer_contents_page.html you will see many of his boards with a white railband.

I would recomend painting on top of the hotcoat and then golss over it. If you paint right onto wood, you will likley get bleeding (maybe swelling) & will need 1/4" pinlines.

Cheers.

-Austin

I was wondering if you could give me the information on where you got your wood, the name number and location. Also i was wondering if you could tell me if i could use another type of wood that will work and is easy to find on the east, cause balsa is a rare commodity in the East. Thank you for your help.

I recently started making my own surfboards. I live on long Island in new york and ive been picking up blanks from local surfers and I want to find a company that doesnt have ridiculous shipping rates for 4 blanks.
