Now much much does it weigh? More importantly how does it ride?
Doesn’t seem like it cost you that much either(if you already had the tools). 150 for the balsa, and then 50ish for the Epoxy. Thats if I am reading that right! But congrats on you board!
It weighs 15lbs due to poor wood selection, and the raw materials only costed me 200 US, I had to buy all new tools though, so I spent around 500.
With lighter balsa, this board could weigh less than 10lbs. I’ve only ridden it a few times so far, but I am happy with it at this point, I’ll give some more info as soon as I have a few more days on it.
I see that you weren’t kidding. . . . . that’s a mighty long post, but interesting, good to see all the details. Our first balsa 7’5" weighed 15 pounds too (it was like yours but solid, no chambers, thinner, narrower, glassed with 6 ounce)
yours is the first parallel profile board I have seen with a traditional raked fin, it suits it I think.
Can you bring this board to the Fish Fry on Sunday May 7th? I’m sure there are a lot of us (Swaylockians) and even Surfermag.com members that would like to see this board.
My motive for this post was to take six months of research and put it in one place to inspire future and current board builders, I hope that this post will be a valuable resource and I would like to see some people taking advantage of this very soon.
I can’t take credit for the method though, that’s one of Roy Stewarts basic layups, but I did make all of the measurments myself.
*I will be at the Fish Fry, so any of those who would like to take a look at it in person can.
My point was that it seemed like he was taking some slams when all he was doing was documenting his process in more detail than before for people who might want that info.
Also, I thought it strange that people don’t remember this board when it was not all that long ago and such a unique and beautiful board.
I did not mean that what he did was nothing. I meant the opposite.
After riding about fifty waves in the last few days, I have a really good feel for my board.
First off, it floats me just fine (I’m 6’2" 150lbs) and it duck dives like a champ! it rides super smooth and I can really feel the wave benith my feet. One of my best waves I cought the other day…It a was solid 5’ wave, the drop was steep, but I made it in by stylishly droping into a very smooth bottom turn and following that with a nice little cutback. I was able to stay on the line for a few more seconds and hang a quick 5 before it closed out. I’ll never surf a tri-fin again…unless I don’t have a single handy : )
i love this post - the board is great - in fact i loved it so much i started to build a 5’6 fish the same way - having trouble finding balsa in the UK so i have started making a 1/4 scale “prototype” - i dont want to go throught it all again on here as i’ve posted a bit on Magic Seaweed -
