Good Evening! Tried some Future today for the first time and it came out pretty good. Now as usual I have about 20 questions. I put on 2 coats with 30 minute dry time in between. Finish on board was 320 wetsand. Should I have gone a little further say 400? what is the best way to shine it up after it dries good. I am not trying to get high gloss just a nice shine. Product says to recoat after 8 hours which I will probably do tomorrow. Next board will have some intricate spray (on the foam). I am planning on spraying a light coat of Future after I cut the pattern to minimize bleed under the tape edge. Is this OK to do before(under) the color coat? Thanks. MLC
Interested to hear details of your use of Future. Mostly when I’m airbrushing, for a good line you have GOT to have clean foam - this means NO dust on the surface to prevent proper tape adhesion. Gotta use good tape too, the 3M stuff is the only place to be, forget the 3-digit number for it (senior moment). I brush off the blank when pauu shaping with a soft dustpan brush several times in different directions, then up to the garage/glassing room and use my compressor to blow off what seems like a lot more dust. I’d like to have a vacuum cleaner and brush, but I think the compressed air is better, just leaves a light haze over everything that happens to be in the garage. Besides, the Significant Other will have kittens if the vacuum gets all dusty - go figure.
…I use Future to seal blanks and mixing in paints,no more water mixing. It dries fast and bonds better with a shell like toughness. The glassing process is not effected by the Future and may even help it giving a better bond. …as far as a finish sealant as long as you didn’t put it on to thick(I use Smart and Final Iris brand “Supercrylic” it’s glossy and has less side effects for finish board sealers) just sand with a scotchbrite pad between coats and after. Finally, put a little carwax on it and polish with low rpms and watch it shine.Herb
Herb, Where do you get the Supercrylic? Also can I spray the whole blank before I tape it off? Do you ever spray a light coat of white before you put the color down to make it brighter? If I understand this right it is OK to put a light coat of Future over the whole blank after pulling tape and before first lam with no ill affects. Some of my graphic needs to go across the stringer in a few places. Any advice on that would be great too. I’ll try the scothbrite on a hookit, we used to use that stuff for prepping cars to paint. Works great. Thanks for your time. MLC
The superacrylic is from a store called SMART AND FINAL a west coast chain catering to small business, restaraunts etc similar to costco, I have found similar products at janitorial supply houses your looking for an acrylic sealer http://www.surfboardglassing.com
Still asking the same question as 6 months ago:- Does anyone know an Australian Equivalent to “Future?” http://www.speedneedle.com.au
…I wish I could send you some Josh,Kokua was using a acrylic thinner from Hawaii Fiberglass Co. that seemed to be very simular if not the same.Try them.As far as in Aus. Go hit a large store or supplier and see if they have any clear acrylic floor sealant w/o any other BS in it,Good Luck. …You can seal the blank with Future before and after painting. No ,I don’t paint my boards white it looks tacky by blocking the chrystal glow from the foam. The future sprayed on the foam heightens the chrystal glow so your boards look brighter, whiter and stay that way much longer.Herb
The main guy at Fiberglass Hawaii (808-847-3951) is Ted Wilson, he is/was either a Kiwi or Aussie, he might be able to help a countryman.
Howzit Herb, Ithink the only difference between Future and the acrylic thinner from Fiberglass Hi. is the price, last gallon I bought was $13.50 and since I don’t see future in the stores here I don’t know what it costs. But like everything else in Hi. we have to pay extra. Aloha, Kokua
…Kokua, and others, …I would be using the thinner as Kokua has described but it’s to EZ to run down to the local Target store and pick up a quart for $5.00.It goes along way for me and I still have like 4-5 bottles in storage.Next Time I’m up in Santa Barbara,I pick up a gallon and do a taste test(and no I’m not going to drink it ! That’s what the apprentices are for)Then we will see how close the two are.Herb
and that U.s.a brand…varathane?
Herb, I am making a board out of EPS and have a question. Can I use the future(or equivelent) to seal the blank instead of using spackle before laminating? It seems as if you said that above, but I wanted to clarify…thanks a lot…
…Not without using a shit load,I sear the blank, then I use elmer’s glue (on styro).Herb-
(herb writes…)-…I use Future to seal blanks and mixing in paints,no more water mixing. It dries fast and bonds better with a shell like toughness. The glassing process is not effected by the Future and may even help it giving a better bond. So you seal it(eps) with spackle and then use future? Also is the future clear or milky (opaque) in color? I have acess(ie-free…) to acrylic sealers and waxes(floor finishes…) but they are milky(opaque) and contain about 18% solids…just curious if I could use them. They dry clear, shiny and hard…what do you think? Thanks for the help and info…Sean
…oh yeah…you seal it with spackle …and then “baste” it with elmers?? Thanks for the info-Sean W
Sprinkle with garlic salt and bake it at 350 for 3 hours.
…s-t-f-u…
…Yes spackle then elmers,Herb
Thanks Herb, and Betty C…ha…
