I searched the archives, but could not find the specific problem I am having. The plastic pin which holds the back end of the fin in the box has broken and come out. I cannot explain how this happened due to the embarassment it would cause me. I am wondering if there is a way to repair this without removing the fin box. The rest of the box is in good shape. Any advice? I have a lot of ding repair experience so I am not afraid to try anything. Thanks in advance if anyone has a solution.
hi, possibly drill a channel downward at the point where the bar was, to roughly the same depth on both sides and insert a metal(or plastic) bar and glass in. not sure if this is possible though.
ok heres what ya do put some release agent (oil wax surfwaxcooking oil whatever epoxy wont stik to and put it on the base of the fin…step 2 get some 5 min epoxy put a little dab in the spot where it broke of (pin area of the box) just a dab now a pea size amount then jam the fin in there and screw here down and wait a couple hours and remove the fin…or bring it to a pro and hell replace the box in a jip and you wont ever notice
Put in a new box. Cheaper than losing a fin in the water and having to get another set. Get a diamond wheel in a dremel tool and carefully cut around the box outline then pull it out. I’ve replaced many of these, and they come out without losing a lot of foam 99% of the time.
thanks for the advice Nat ( and everyone else) I chose to epoxy a new pin in place in the existing box. I noticed the pins in the other boxes had glue or plastic between them and the rear of the box, a result of the mold they are made in I guess. I measured and wedged and propped the new pin in place with a wooden stirrer from my local coffee shop (I take a few every so often for stirring resin for repairs). The new pin was cut from a flag that was placed on my neighbors lawn to warn of dangerous fertilizers. As the 5 minute epoxy was about to cure I removed the wood. I checked it out after 24 hours and it seems really solid. Better than replacing the box IMO although I could use some experience with that.
I believe there is something on the Futures website that will show you how to repair a problem like this. Yep, here’s the link. http://www.futuresfins.com/repairs.php
The website has info on how to fix a tight or stripped screw, but nothing about a broken pin (or whatever that is called at the tail end of the box). I also emailed Futures from their site but got no response. Oh well, I am better for the knowledge gained from fixing it on my own.
Thanks! Just picked up a used board and went to switch out the fins and noticed two of the boxes are missing their tabs. Looks like I got me some epoxy work to do.
