future flex carbon fiber repair

Hey again!  You might rememer me from the heavy danny hess thread or the delaminated pendoflex… hahah i got quite a few interesting ding projects in the mix.  Here’s my last one… knock on wood.  Got a buckled Hypto Krypto.  Its a future flex board with carbon fiber rails.  Another  fun ride.  My buckle is super minor, thanks to those carbon fiber rails which saved my board.  I have no demlamination, hardly even a crease.  But the carbon fiber on either side of the rails has a fracture that broke the carbon fiber.  I could fix this right away with a few pieces of 4oz cloth… or hunt down some carbon fiber which im sure would be stronger and use that instead.  What would you fine gentlemen use?

Never worked with carbon fiber, which is why im reaching out.  i’m trying to keep up with the times after owning mostly pu boards.  I imagine you just laminate the carbon fiber on there like you would a piece of 4oz s cloth with a bit of epoxy and then fealther out the edges to flush it out.  Let me know if i’m on track…thanks guys!  Oh and does anyone know where i can get a little strip of carbon fiber in or around san diego.  THanks!

Here’s a gash on the bottom.  definatly could use a piece of carbon fiber to connect that section that broke off.  Probably will fill that gash up with cabosil and then glass the carbon fiber over that missing section.  Also have a piece of stryrofoam i could epoxy in there… would look more natural.  I could cut the piece of stryofoam to shape, epoxy it in, sand it flush, then lay the carbon fiber and s cloth glass over it. What do you think will work better?  that white gash in the pendo on the bottom on my other thread was actually filled in with styrofoam from some packaging.  Will document what i do for whoever comes across this.

I’ve made boards with carbon rails for a few years now. I would sand heavily with 60 grit tape off rail area where you want the patch with 2 layers of tape, one on top of the other being precise. Brush on a layer of epoxy, lay down your carbon tape, wet out carbon with brush then wrap the rail tightly with cling film (the stuff you wrap your sandwiches in). Make sure this is pulled down tight. Let it go off and sand with sander cutting through to tape on edges. You will not have to cut with a knife your sander will do it for you. Then patch over with 3 layers of 4 oz first layer biggest but all three bigger than carbon repair. Good as new! Cheers rich

Thanks for the reply, do you think the additional layer of carbon fiber over the board will mess up the overall flex?  Worried it might ride a little too stiff and maybe i should use s cloth instead.  Any experience with this?

You can worry about it but if it’s feathered out well you won’t tell a blind but of difference. Trust me repaired a few similar to that.

I have a less serious ding on the rail of my hypto (some wiener ran me over this morning)…no buckling and does not look like any carbon fiber is majorly impacted. Any thoughts on whether it would even be worth putting a carbon fiber patch on it? Thinking of just sanding down just to the carbon fiber, filling a little w/ epoxy, and throwing two 4 oz layers over it (wrapping it around to the deck and the bottom a little). Think it would effect the flex doing it that way? Open to suggestions. See photos:

Hi, i never followed up on my thread, here is a pic of how it turned out.  Overall i’m stoked, looks like new.

Hi poconnell… can’t see ur pics, just the icons.  If the carbon fiber broke on your rail email hayden, they sent me a roll of the stuff for free.  If its just the cloth well then don’t do any carbon fiber work.  All the strength in these boards is in the rails since there is no stringer, you have a compromise in the carbon fiber, then its likely the board could snap.  There is a video on youtube from adviso which shows how to do a carbon fiber patch i found very helpful.  For my rail i picked off the dead glass and filled in the hole with epoxy to flush it out, laid the carbon fiber over the rail, sanded the carbon fiber patch flush around the edges, and then laid 4oz s cloth over the carbon fiber, sand, hotcoat, sand, done.  Some people warned that it would screw up the flex, make it too stiff having uneven layer of carbon fiber around the edges, but the board rides great.  I’ve got another psychadelic germ with future flex thats never needed ding repair and dont feel any difference.   Some people warned that it would most likely snap because of the uneven carbon fiber but i’ve air dropped the board in some heavy beach break and the thing was solid.

See if this works. I’m usually pretty good at this sort of stuff, but having trouble uploading photos for some reason. I did watch the Aviso video. It really looks no different from a regular repair.

And thanks for the tips. Looks like the photos uploaded now.

Confirmed when I got home last night when I sanded it back the ding definitely cut through the carbon fiber. I was trying to be optimistic. I spoke w/ someone at Hayden Shapes and they’re going to see about getting me a scrap or two of some leftover carbon fiber. I’ll post some pics of the process once I get the repair finished for conversation sake. Thanks again for the info.
