Future Hollow boards

Looks interesting…Shape the board from this water soluable “foam”. Vac bag glass/carbon/foam core/glass /carbon. Drill hole, dissolve out former and there you go a hollow board.

Ok have to instal fin boxes etc and think things through but seems a possibility…maybe cost prohibitive.

Anyone know of any other watersoluable core materials?

I guess you could do the same with an EPS/eopxy board by drilling a hole and pouring styrene monomer or lacquer thinner into it to dissolve out the EPS. I have thought about it, just never tried it. If you have stringers in the board, you’d have to drill holes in them so that the dissolving solution can get from one side of the board to the other. I imagine fin systems that bridge the deck and bottom would work well. It would look strange, a transparent board with wood stringers…

How you would dispose of the dissolved polystyrene safely is beyond me. I guess maybe it’s not so good an idea.

Pykrete and Suncure, actually just pykrete would be enough during the winter where I live (a bit heavy, but it would be wild, not to mention make a pretty cheap surfboard.)

Anyway, while waiting forever for 7 minutes to pass (UV curing a board) on a Winter’s day, the thought came to me that you could make a surfboard out of pykrete, possibly reinforcing it with thin longitudinal and transwerve cords. Sure is would weight a ton, but some of my boards did anyway. Of course, as it turned out, my mask just need new filters (after changing them such daydreams seem to occur less frequently.)

Anyway, you could make the shape (for the shell) out of pykrete then Suncure it, then melt the pykrete.

If you don’t know what pykrete is check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pykrete .
