futures fin lug trouble

Hi crew,

The lug that goes into my futures fin box has rounded off where the allen key goes in (it’s always been a tight to turn).

Any sugestions how to get the lug out?  without damaging the plastic thread of the box?

Thanks

Careful drill it with a smaller bit. Put a new lug in

Drilling out and then re-tapping the hole isn’t too hard if worse comes to worst, Good Luck.

you can get the FCS tool that has the attachments in the handle.

they have an “easy out” a reverse threaded attachment designed specifically for this.

ill get it out of the car later and send you a pic via facebook messages, (easier from my Phone).

or i just found a few pics on that magical thing called the internet

Drill it out with a small sharp drill in reverse, that way when the drill bit catches on the lug after a bit of drilling it will spin the lug out rather than forcing it in further and potentially causing more problems.

Sometimes after a bit of drilling you can force the fin key in further and then take it out manually

e z out, or torx bit should get it out.

cool mate… I’m giving the facebook thing the flick, post it up here would be good ta

torx bit mmmm sounds interesting, I’ll check them out on line ta

Thanks, I bought this 1/16 bit, so, i’ll give it a go… The waves are up here (after a 2 mth flat spell) need this fixed this arvo cause tomorrow look fun.Cheers

I’l let ya know haha

…  A pic of a drill bit… woo hoo lol

thanks

thank you

I tried to drill it in reverse and didn’t get anywhere.

so drilled into it deepish and got a traditional screw and screwed it in by hand (hoping to get a bite enough to reverse screw it out), nope, it pushed the lug back in. So the fins not loose anymore, it’s tight. But no changing it side fins…

I marked it with a big black X, and changed the back fin in hope to get the feeling i’m after.

Thanks Out!

That drill bit looks like normal right hand where the bit digs when spun clockwise. Using a left hand bit with the drill running backwards from normal might do the job, similar to an easy out. That way the bit is trying to twist the grub screw loose intead of back into the box.

yeah, I’ll try that. Left hand drill bit, sounds like your taking the piss out of me haha, but i’ll check it out.

Here ya go it’s the attachment in the middle. Ya might have stuffed it with the drill bit.

Hi Yorky no joke intended. Just visualize which way everything needs to spin. LH tools run counter-clockwise to unscrew ‘normal’ RH fasteners out of RH threads.

Yes the easy out is as close to a sure thing as you will get.  Provided you can find one that small.  If you have already drilled into the center maybe you can get the easy out to bite into that existing hole.  Otherwise you are going to be drilling it out and retapping.  Small tap and die kits aren’t too exspensive.  I’ve had trouble with grub screws before.  The problem is usually due to my own lack of care in being sure the screw was properly thread.  If it doesn’t go down with no more than firm pressure, it is usually cross threaded.  Considering that all the Futures and FCS stuff is made in China these days doesn’t help matters.  Good luck Yorkster.

You could be doing something like this

All the Futures Boxes, ILT and 1 shot boxes and a bunch of the fins are made here in HB, not china.

look inside the boxes

The grub screws too huh??
