I recently shaped the 6'2" egg below , with a 5 fin setup. First try at a five finner. It wouldnt be any fun if I didnt screw something up! The front four futures boxes have 3/4" tang and the rear center box
has 1/2" tang.
I swear i've seen futures quad setups with all four boxes 3/4" tang. The rear fins stuck in the board below have the 1/2" tang and so does the other quad setups i've got laying around. I'm not ripping any boxes out (yet) and riding as a tri fin is fine - the board is sweet.
Is anyone aware of any Futures quad setups with rear fins that fit 3/4" tang boxes?
Any suggestions on alternative fin combinations that would fit the 3/4" tang boxes?
Futures offers both 3/4 and 1/2 tang fins for quad rears, you just have to specify when you order them. I put in 3/4 boxes all around in a few quads I made so I can use any of the fronts from the thruster sets I have laying around as well.
i know you can still use the trailer fins with the half inch tang but if you want the right size fin just call up future fins and ask them for some
i know when future fins started doing quads all the fins were 3/4 inch but then they relised that they need smaller sized tangs to fit in smaller boards thats when they started doing the 1/2 inch tangs so theres not alot of them around but they do make them good luck
I've built 5 quad boards with 3/4|" future fin boxes with no problems. The only reason to use 1/2" deep boxes is if your tail thickness is less than 3/4" and the box would poke through the deck. Using 1/2" deep future fins in a 3/4" box has no ill effect.
OK...having done from online shopping, Im feeling a little better...there ARE some futures fins available with all four fins 3/4" tang...phew!
The Futures Controllers in the board above have the 1/2 tang in the rear fins and i did try installing them and tightening the set screw down. But I cant believe for a second that installing the 1/2 tang fin in a 3/4 inch box (so the fin base is not even touching the bottom of the fin box) is a good idea. Is this waht you mean by the part of your quote ive bolded? REALLY?

Mitchell, if you really want to use those fins you could make them work. The notch at the back of the fin is locked in by the post in the box. You could cut up a tongue depressor or similar piece of wood and lay that in the box to take up that space. Once you lock down the front of the fin with the set screw it might be ok.

Thanks Johnny...gonna make my own shims like you said, and it turns out Futures makes adaptor shims to fit 1/2" base fins in 3/4" boxes as well...
Most SUPs come with all 3/4 deep boxes. I’ve cut the notch at the front deeper and gotten the 1/2" fins to lock in level in a deep box. I’ve also done the glue a piece of scrap under the fin too. Pretty easy to make them work.
What really sucks is having all 3/4 deep fins and your box is only 1/2 deep!
Sorry for the quote about 1/2" boxes I should have said - I weigh 200 pounds, do 40 foot jumps, rip waves, go 40 mph and push fins to the absolute limit and have never had a 1/2" future fin tab explode in a 3/4" box. On the otherhand, I have had at least 4 boards explode over failed FCS fins/boxes doing the same things. In my book the deeper the box, the stronger the box but I'm used to building windsuf boards with 18" inch fins using deep tuttle boxes extending to the deck. Unless you are hitting bottom, rocks or floating debris I don't think the fin tab bottoming out on the box is a big deal.
