wow …
thanks, Mark , for the very encouraging words !
That’s an interesting story about Steve and one that , for some reason , seems to mean a fair bit to me . Not that I have ever marketed my fins or even ever will [usually just give them away ] , but more from the aspect of , I guess … as you said , the word "intuition’ …Steve evidently knew , saw, and ‘felt’ what he wanted , and in his case someone [‘Coda’?] liked it .
I like making fins . I want to get better at foiling . And finishing . To get to the stage where I DO go with my “gut feeling” more , and develop an eye and ‘feel’ for a good shape and foil . (This, I think , takes time , too.)
I want to try different materials , test stuff out for myself . If I make a fin for someone else and they like it …well ! … Luke , I’m stoked it worked for your board and you ! (That gets me excited , a bit , too ! )
I really am fairly new to the fin making side of things , but perhaps that can be a good thing really …no jaded “ah yes , ho hum , I saw / made that 20 years ago” [closed] mindset to get in the way of trying stuff .
"Wildy " sending me a set of his side fins [thanks again mate!] to look at also got me thinking .
…Different …different , indeed ! I can’t wait to ride them [next week , hopefully … when this 'flu is hopefully gone , and …swell , and winds permitting ?!]
I DO enjoy drawing up and cutting out different / various templates ! [ it must be the ‘grom’ in me , I think !] And laying up fin panels . It surprises me a bit when I ask around , how few people do it ?
It’s worth the effort , in my books . Okay , it may cost me something like maybe $80aus in materials , but when the panel is done …endless possibilities of what fins / keels / runners / sidebites to cut out ! …Therein lies the stoke / challenge / thrill !
And then …
adding fabric , or pigment , or tint […or maybe all !] to the mix , well , it really is a custom , then !
Sitting here looking at my three fabric inlay starry fins installed and waiting in my “prawn” … it’s a nice feeling . I hope that doesn’t sound smug or something . I just mean , I didn’t know how to lay up a fin panel say ten years ago. Now I do , and also how to colour it , and stuff . (I much prefer fibreglass fins , so I figure I had to make some , sooner or later !)
Having the "prawn’’ to play with has been good, too , because of a fairly unlimited combination of fin sizes, rakes , thicknesses and foils , as well as numbers of fins on the one board . It has been my main board for the last three years , really , when I think about it .
The experimenting continues …
maybe one day if / when I am living near a good , consistent right hand point break , I will get a better chance to really test out the various fins in some quality , for a change…
I guess that’s why I’d be keen to hear from people who use fcs, and have decent waves near them to test some of these fins in . Pity people here seem to have such an aversion to fcs . To me they get the job done, for me …they are easy to install , easy to make fins for , and fairly lightweight , so I can put in LOTS of them on a board to play with …
Anyway , this is the longest post I’ve done …forgive me if I’ve rambled . I guess I just really appreciated hearing that what I am playing around with down here in this little isolated neck of the woods , is in some way encouraging / challenging / helping people to think outside their peer[s] , as I have also learnt lots from the Berts , Tom@s, lokboxs , blakestah’s and others here researching and sharing their fin findings . It would be nice to be able to also in some way be giving back , so … dot dot dot eh ?!
cheers !
