Futures twin system?

Howzit all,

I have a Mandala quad fish w/ the Futures quad system. I wanna try to ride it as a twin, but I’m not sure if Futures makes a twin fin system that would fit in my boxes (quad fins are shorter in length from leading to trailing edge). Anybody know what my best bet would be?

bor,

As far as I know all Futures boxes are the same length. Futures makes a keel fin to fit their box as well as other twin fins. Mike

anyone in OZ carry the futures keels ?? - might try 'em in my quad

anyone know anyone anywhere that carry the futures keels?

regards,

Håvard

if you really get stuck , perhaps have a go at making your own … Twin FIN , or twin KEEL ?

Plenty of keel options to choose from here , plus a few twin fins too …

I just ordered a set of Futures K2 Keels from Fusion Surf Shop http://www.fusionsurf.com/futures-fins.asp?surf=7

I got the last set of K2s, but John said he still had some K1s

Futures only has 2 sizes of boxes - the standard side box and the shallower center box.

talked to futures in sydney today, will have some in oz by 4-6 weeks

Haa,

His prices are a little high I think but he has them and at least you get a picture of them.

I’ve seen a huge twin by Futures shaped by Steve Forestall, but the only time I’ve seen it is on one of Steve’s boards.

It is a nice looking fin though. Big and thick, for guys who like them that way. You need a big antenna to catch those small summer FL waves.

Mcnabb twin fin bought mine for like $15 for the se

hi Mark !

would you by any chance have a photo of that one , or a website address which would , please ?

I’m still ‘toying’ with the idea of making some BIG twins for my prawn board , as per the “keel templates” thread [ie: the twin fin templates I posted on that thread] . Wood core , though , just to be safe on the plugs …

thanks !

I Ben,

Sorry no picture just a mental one. Funny thing was I was talking to Steve a few years ago when he ws grinding down this hideous flourescent pink slab of half inch thick fiberglass stock into these humongous fins. Said he got the stock free off a pile of someone elses junk in the indus park. Would have been very expensive stock. That was a few years ago. Then last summer I was in his neck of the woods (his bay is next to Greg’s) and saw him fixing a ding in a board with uvcure standing in the morning sun with a twin with some huge fins but these had Futures logos on them. They said Futures and CODA on them. I asked and he said futures was making a fin for him. I said not those hideous pink ones he made that time. He said yes, the one I saw him make. These were nice looking molded fins with his brand name “Coda” on them. Dont have any idea how he got that on there. But he did.

I checked futures site and a few others. NO pictures.

I am making plans to go next month so maybe then.

But Ben I’ve seen your work. You dont need help, you give it. Why not take your favorite fin template and a scribe set it for something between 1/4 and 1/2 inch and trace around and just go from there? Make it “pleasing to the eye”. That is an engineering term. You’ll know it when you see it. Trust your insincts, because instinct is a big part of design. Intuition. YOU have more of that than anyone here. The good kind too. As in “share the stoke”…that was brilliant. Intuition is a very powerful tool.

If you think the prices for the fins are high, check the shipping cost. US$65 to ship to Norway…

Sheeeeeshhh…

wow …

thanks, Mark , for the very encouraging words !

That’s an interesting story about Steve and one that , for some reason , seems to mean a fair bit to me . Not that I have ever marketed my fins or even ever will [usually just give them away ] , but more from the aspect of , I guess … as you said , the word "intuition’ …Steve evidently knew , saw, and ‘felt’ what he wanted , and in his case someone [‘Coda’?] liked it .

I like making fins . I want to get better at foiling . And finishing . To get to the stage where I DO go with my “gut feeling” more , and develop an eye and ‘feel’ for a good shape and foil . (This, I think , takes time , too.)

I want to try different materials , test stuff out for myself . If I make a fin for someone else and they like it …well ! … Luke , I’m stoked it worked for your board and you ! (That gets me excited , a bit , too ! )

I really am fairly new to the fin making side of things , but perhaps that can be a good thing really …no jaded “ah yes , ho hum , I saw / made that 20 years ago” [closed] mindset to get in the way of trying stuff .

"Wildy " sending me a set of his side fins [thanks again mate!] to look at also got me thinking .

…Different …different , indeed ! I can’t wait to ride them [next week , hopefully … when this 'flu is hopefully gone , and …swell , and winds permitting ?!]

I DO enjoy drawing up and cutting out different / various templates ! [ it must be the ‘grom’ in me , I think !] And laying up fin panels . It surprises me a bit when I ask around , how few people do it ?

It’s worth the effort , in my books . Okay , it may cost me something like maybe $80aus in materials , but when the panel is done …endless possibilities of what fins / keels / runners / sidebites to cut out ! …Therein lies the stoke / challenge / thrill !

And then …

adding fabric , or pigment , or tint […or maybe all !] to the mix , well , it really is a custom , then !

Sitting here looking at my three fabric inlay starry fins installed and waiting in my “prawn” … it’s a nice feeling . I hope that doesn’t sound smug or something . I just mean , I didn’t know how to lay up a fin panel say ten years ago. Now I do , and also how to colour it , and stuff . (I much prefer fibreglass fins , so I figure I had to make some , sooner or later !)

Having the "prawn’’ to play with has been good, too , because of a fairly unlimited combination of fin sizes, rakes , thicknesses and foils , as well as numbers of fins on the one board . It has been my main board for the last three years , really , when I think about it .

The experimenting continues …

maybe one day if / when I am living near a good , consistent right hand point break , I will get a better chance to really test out the various fins in some quality , for a change…

I guess that’s why I’d be keen to hear from people who use fcs, and have decent waves near them to test some of these fins in . Pity people here seem to have such an aversion to fcs . To me they get the job done, for me …they are easy to install , easy to make fins for , and fairly lightweight , so I can put in LOTS of them on a board to play with …

Anyway , this is the longest post I’ve done …forgive me if I’ve rambled . I guess I just really appreciated hearing that what I am playing around with down here in this little isolated neck of the woods , is in some way encouraging / challenging / helping people to think outside their peer[s] , as I have also learnt lots from the Berts , Tom@s, lokboxs , blakestah’s and others here researching and sharing their fin findings . It would be nice to be able to also in some way be giving back , so … dot dot dot eh ?!

cheers !

ben
