g-rasp

Hey

Just thinking about getting one of these g-rasp tools from Greenlight.  Any one tried one? It looks like it could work well for smoothing out my blank after the planer, there is a 12" and 24".  Just wondering what some people’s take on it?

Interesting.    I'd like to try one.

me too

I’ve been using the 12" and it works really well especially truing up your outline, blending rail bands or making rail bands. Works great on EPS as well, a very versatile tool from the mind of Brian.

The 12 inch is very versatile as Tom said. The 24 ich is good for leveling out the blank. Also their is free grit replacing if it ever gets dull. Check out the concave rasp also.

Just got the whole collection from Brian, they all work great!

I really like these:

wich look like a similar concept…

I too would like to give one of Greenlight’s a go.

EDIT: And, bye the way, the free carbide replacment is a deal. The Pleskunas that I have loses grit every time I use it. I think I will replace it with the Greenlight one when mine eventually dies.

I finally got one of the G-rasps and I can say the thing really works well.  Takes down foam quick, I like that I can use it to flatten a large surface on my blank evenly.  I'm not sure about taking down a stringer with it tho,  seems the grit rubs off on anything harder than foam but if I can get it recoated for free it might not be an issue. I'd probably still use a planer for that.   One thing that you might have to do is the foam cushion that comes on it might need to be replaced, parts of mine have fell off already but a really minor issue.

I have been using the G Rasp and agree it works really well. I too have found it works best on Foam and still use a pane / spokeshave on the stringer. Currently shaping an Ice 9 blank that I have had laying around. I would like to try the 24 inch one as well and I do have their rail runner tool. Would like to see some techniques being used with their Concave tool as well.

Good products IMO

I think next time I order resin from Greenlight I might get one of the  24" too be great for leveling the whole blank, right now I have a 2x4 with a piece of 20 grit glued to it.  How do you find their rail runner tool?

Glad you guys like the new rasp collection. Been workin on them for a while. My goal with the G-rasp was to replace the surform with a more efficicent and comfortable tool. At 4" wide it’s easy to grip naturally and scrubs a lot more foam in one pass. Won’t roll over on ya either. Ever have a surform roll and gouge the blank? Hate that.

The loose grit will shed a little on the first shape but the rest will remain intact. Of course grinding away at the stringer with any rasp will dull it quicker so try to keep it on the foam. But we’ll recoat the grit if it gets knocked off…

I’m planing to shoot a short video of the concave rasp technique as soon as I get a chance. Hopefully this weekend.

Thanks for the feedback

~Brian
