Gary Linden falls into the same category that Jeff Timpone is in -----"underappreciated"
Great guy, great shaper, great surfer, good friend. I could say more…
Could say a lot about Timpone too…
how much rocker do you think that board has?

Both are old school craftsmen who do not need a computer pre-shape to make themselves look good. Hell, I know Gary still does not have his own CNC. Timpone had probably the best finish work l saw in the late 70’s and early 80’s even before he left Russell. He knew haw to do it all, even back then. As for Gary, he’s already a living legend- even to those who know him. Still fearless of the big days, in his sixties. I appreciate the influence both of them have had on me.
I had the pleasure of working with Gary and he is the perfect gentleman.
He is honest and very knowledgeable.
A straight up guy that deserves recognition in a craft he is so gifted!

Give credit were credits due.
I agree with you completely.
Jeff Timpone is a class act and can shape ANYTHING. On Maui he shapes everything from tow-in boards for the Jaws crew to longboards for da crew at Pavilions.. When I left Maui last year as far as I know he was still at the Cannery in Haiku doing customs and shop orders for Neil Prude in Kahului. The story I have always heard was that he sold his glass shop to Dave Gott several years back and has concentrated on shaping exclusively. Jeff can walk his blanks out the door of his shaping room right over to Dave Gotts glass shop. Dave Gott has done a great job with Gott Glassing and glasses all the name brands you can think of on Maui. If you haven't seen some of Jeff Timpones shapes in a few years you are missing a glimpse at the shaping of a master.
Oh by the way Randy Cone shapes a pretty damned nice gun as well. Another under appreciated shaper.
where can we find some pics or videos of those shapes mcding?
i already read everything on linden his site, and some interview he did on a shaping expo, but some more boards are always welcome
just today i saw mark healy with a 9ft quad gun and some pics of him surfing a beast at puerto rico? on surfmag i think
healey mentioned you just have to stay close to the board and set a line, the rest will happen automatically.
We can make a hugh list of under appreciated shapers.
Pat Rawson would also be other one that comes to mind.
Randy Cone is definity one of them. So is Jeff T. Agreed!
I made this post out of respect for Gary and I think he as done a lot for surfing and as played a historical part in the delevopement of the sport. What he contributes to the sport should be noted. I’m sure Randy feels the same?
would love to see a fin set up on that quad . bigger fins in the front or back ?

I had the pleasure of meeting Kendall at Sacred Craft in Del Mar. He introduced me to Gary Linden who I thought did a great job during the shape off. Both guys seemed to me to be gentlemen and class acts.
Was always happy with Gary Linden’s boards… Back in the early '90s, when shortboards where going through a period of very rapid change in design, Gary was right on top of it, and knew the whys and hows. While other board builders seemed to go to extremes, Gary’s designs were solid, and not so fad-ish. Average guys like me appreciated that. I still have one of his boards from that era.
bigger fins to the front smaller in the back
Was hanging out at a well known beach in Oregon recently with a few guys I had met that morning during and after a quick surf in extreme low tide shapeless waves. One of the guys sat on the hood of his car strumming a six string. Sunny nice morning. The tide filled in a little and a peak down the beach started to shape up a bit. The guy with the guitar decided he would get wet. He hadn't been out with us earlier. He suits up and pulls a really nice Linden out of the back of his car. Winged thruster with really nice color work. Beautiful board. He bought it in Cannon Beach at a local shop.
Very impressive looking board. thick, wide and very clean lines. I would love to get a look at the rocker. It would be nice to hear Gary talk about his thoughts on that shape and fin set up.
…I think underappreciated is not so precise because in late 80s and 90s he was one of the 3 mainstream shapers in USA…and media approved.
He tried to have a factory in Japan and Brazil but with no so luck
plus, when the C foam shutdown he was a partner with W foam to provide new foam…but did not work at all
-One important thing to name is that he s a very good surfer and really surf not like many well know shapers that are never in the water (and yes, they have plenty of time and money to surf), or dont know how to surf, like Stretch
