Started with an eBay purchase of $50, bit of rattle can fun looking to turn a white Gath into something less bland.
No skill involved just a simple 2 blue blend on one side and a 2 green blend on the other.
Got to remove the tape and do a bit more down the centre but the blue is calming and the green side is a bit funky mottled.
Well its better than white.
I first considered doing some hand drawn Posca artwork but at any distance it’d look muddled so I went with big colours and basic concepts.
I thought Gaths were for physical protection but inside the helmet it says its only for environmental protection…sun, sand , water, wind protection nothing about physical impact protection.
Many of the older surfers at Margies in West Oz are a Gath crew, to protect their noggins from the reef, skin from the brutal southern hemi UV.
My favorite was a schoolteachers helmet his kids had painted up like a bumblebee, black with big yellow spots
he took a brutal pitch on a sizeable day, surfaced with his helmet split in two, nasty gash in his head even with the helmet.
Or as he said later "reckon that lid just saved me bacon’…
