Check this out! My elbows ache just from watching....
I heard some grunting and groaning in one shot where you were flipping it over. LOL - no need for shaper's weights.
Great job on that beast! The change in shirts make it apparent that it was a multi-day job.
It looked like it was glassed with a layer of clear before you did the color?
Hi John, Double sealed because of the big redwood stringers
Hey John - that sounds cool! I can't watch it because I'm at my mom's, and her computer is soooo slooooowww on videos, so I'll wait until later in the week when I'm baking back in bako haha.
Gene did post some pics here on Sways of shaping that thing in the hallway, I couldn't believe it was 15'5", and not an SUP either! He saw my tagline and assured me it was for a "surfer over 50" hhahaha!
Howzit John, He definitely doesn't likes to stand in one place to shape, don't think I have ever seen anyone do it like that before. Maybe he is glued to the floor. Aloha,Kokua

Nice!
Hi Kokua, I know it looks weird so check this out.
Go here: Video#2 and look at 2:01min to see when i finally got to the regular skinning, you’ll see it looks pretty normal at that point. Or here’s a link to all the videos (do you like watching grass grow?) All 4 Shaping Videos. Tell me if it starts to make sense after reading the approach I took(below) and watching the vids.
The blank just came as-is and rocker was way off so I had to knock down high spots and blend them in. The board I wanted to build was hiding in there and I had to keep digging until I found It, that’s why I keep knocking out sections then checking rocker. Once I got everything knocked down I skinned the whole length. If I would have skinned first I would have lost some thickness (and my brown landmarks) right off the bat.
Here’s another wacky thing you might notice- I cut the plan shape out 3 times, each time getting tighter and closer. I did this because the final rail rocker line wasn’t going to follow the blank rocker so any slight variation from plumb would be greatly amplified over 8" of possibilities, and I didn’t want to adjust rocker and skin on more surface than necessary. So I cut wide and sloppy and did the bottom, cut it close then got my thickness’s, then right on the line and plumb.
Hope life is good in AZ Kokua. If you ever make it to So. Cal give me a call. 805 216-8232
Howzit Gene, Well first off life in Az is a alot different from life in Hanalei where I just movedfrom after 40 years. I like the red tint and the wide lapds lok good also. I have family in Oak Park and my niece worksfor Patagonia so I am not far from you and a few other Sway Guys who I will also get in touch with when I amin your part of Ca. Am trying to get thingstogether to go to the Sways get together at Big Sur and if I make it then I will be working my way down the coast so you are on the map. Aloha,Kokua
Can’t wait to see the finished board, Gene. Please, post more photos! The 653 looks like the tool of choice for this kind of herculean work…
interested ,I took the tour watched all 4 videos
and the glassing one was monumental!
was interested when the nose kinda looked like the 13’1’’
was interested to reaad the one of a kind note
and saw the distinct truncated template’
yes 16’!
made a 15’4’’ had to fabricate up a 12’ piece of foam…
after seeing this 15’5 ‘’ I may finally get to work on the 15’10’’
that I have put on the procrastination rack for over a year.
the clark blank has ahefty piece of wood ,
the weight of this board will justify
a sherpa if not a team of caddies.
My paddling impression of my uncle harry board
as i believe this board will share,is like one of the slow start
power tools…the first couple strokes are just going through the gears
it may not start to glide til after stroke # 5 …put me down as agreeing w/ kokua
way good red.
Kudos.
…ambrose…
thanx for the boost.
Gene
an honer to have you posting here on Sway’s. I also watched all four vid’s and am in complete awe of your work,
I’m inspired and mesmerized
Thanks Matt. The guy that ordered it is a collector/surfer. He got the idea for it when he saw two boards in the same day while visiting Surfing Heritage about 5 years ago - a 12’ gun I made for a Surfrider auction and the 15’2 “AH-WHOoo” board (that Flippy Hoffman rode at Avalanche in the 70’s, I think Munoz shaped that). Then he won the (one of a kind?) 16’ blank at the Clark auction when it closed. He had Jim Phillips put the 2- 3/4" redwoods in and got the blank to me. I’m pretty flattered that he chose me to shape it so I’m going extra hard on it so he has no regrets. It’s probably going straight to his wall but It would be cool to paddle it into something.

Astevens, when you lam over big redwood stringers sometimes the resin appears crystally where it bonds(or doesn’t bond). Either the oils in the wood or it blows or something bad happens at least 25% of the time. Somebody here could probably explain the physics but all i know is that it sucks…or blows and it’s never worth taking the chance. Also I seal many of my foam blanks anyway with a resin/styrene mix just to get a better bond.
Love it.
Watched all 5 vids here at work…
Anyone else want to take that “board” out for a spin? I sure do.
Drew
theres a fifth video???
Probably a stupid question, but why did you need to put a clear lam on before doing your red tint for the red wood stringers?
pretty friggin awesome. where is the board intended to surf?
Nice....... I love watching all the shaping masters different approaches to shaping and glassing. Notice how A-rod hits homers different then Bonds, Sosa, Aaron,Ruth.
Would that make the board turn yellow faster if you seal your blanks with resin/styrene mix?
Also, with those stringers did you just baste the stringers with clear lam resin, then glass clear, then tint red?
Sick board by the way, bet you'll miss it when it's gone.
thanks

No

No, Just sealed the whole board then glassed it red
Sick board by the way, bet you’ll miss it when it’s gone.
Thanks. No, I’ll be happy when it’s done and out the door!
Gene,
Thanks for posting. It was the link from you website that got me here in the first place way back when. I miss your posting, of boards and chicks.....I sound like a stalker, but I'm not. I just love your deducation to the art, and your great executional skills with resin and foam.
Thanks for posting up on that beast.
Welcome back. I missed you.
