Precious little information listed for that item, wouldn’t you say? Does “George Greenough Spoon Board” mean that GG used it personally, designed and/or built it, or that it was inspired by him? For a stratospheric starting bid like that, inquiring minds want to know. And this is from a guy who has had an eBay id for a whole 2 months? Run, Forest, run…

I would not be surprised to find that the spoon was made by a fellow named Peter Coggen, now living in Sidney, Au. He made several when he worked for me at Surf Systems/Surfboards Hawaii. Looks near identical.
Someone over at Flexspoon.com might know more. They have a Hayden Spoon in their board archives… Terry McClarty 67/68?
Recently saw a George Greenough shaped surfboard sell at auction(fund raiser for local guy that passed) in byron bay for $3100(Aus). It was a board that GG made for a COKE commercial and had bolt holes on the deck(nose) where he had attached a camera. When I told him what it had sold for, he said something about that was a long time ago that he shaped it. He had signed it before the auction to validate it.
If the spoon is his, it would probably be worth the price. I shudda bought the COKE board at that price.
If anyone is bidding on it they might call GG and maybe he will remember it.
PM me for phone #
Roger
I can tell you right now George did not make that board or ride it .
It appears to me that it is either this board, or one nearly identical to it:

It looks like John is correct wih the McClarty attribution. So, if this board (or one just like it) sold for $1,600 AUD last year, that would have been about $1200 US. Today the starting bid is slightly over $3,000 US? That’s a factor of 2.5, or a 150% increase. Agreed that a vintage board (or any item, for that matter) is worth what someone is willing to pay, but that seems a tad excessive to me. And I don’t believe there is even any Clark foam in it :->

if anybody is interested in a flex spoon, i might be willing to part with my project velo spoon for about $3,000 U.S. …
I don’t like people selling boards that they didnt make themselves for lots of money.
I don’t like the word ‘selling’ at all now that i think about it.
I think its a disgrace to surfing.
Well, maybe if the proceeds go to help people that need it.
In general, though, money and surfing should be kept as separate as possible. Respectable, humble, craftsman being exceptions and heroes
Yes I am a hyprocite as I’ve of course sold used boards from my quiver in the past, but from now on I only give
I want to grow towards giving…forgiveness
the board shown on flexspoon.com is not the same board that is currently up for sale on Aussie ebay, its a different colour and the one on flexspoon is sitting in my garage waiting for me to lose a bit of weight till i take it out
giving is good and feels good-i know as i have given away perfectly good fins, surfboards, bicycles etc. if someone has a need and i don’t use or need something, i give it away, no problem.last summer i was aked to repar a board for a friends’ son.after assesmnet of board i went home and came back and gave this lad a perfectly good, 9’ PG roundatil hull.his reaction? priceless.(he really digs surfing that board).
hi bluey
im just down the coast from you (east of btn) if you fancy hooking up for a kneeboard sesh in the future let me know.
i would love to see your spoon in the water…
as ever
keen to learn…

Understood. The colors did look somewhat different, but I thought that might possibly be due to lighting or color balance issues between digital cameras. But unless you know differently, it seems to me that your board is similar enough to be a valid comparable to the eBay item for approximating value.
