yup, put me in that group, single, not gay, no relationship… perhaps I should be on Ophra, or maybe someone here should be on Jerry Springer - along with a few more of us. Let’s face it this board fetish is meat and drink to him ‘my b/f loves his surfboard more than me’ ‘damn right girlie’
“my girlfriend said if I go surfing once more, she’ll leave me… gosh, I’ll miss her …”
imagine how many dawn patrols we have had while you guys have been… well… populating the earth…or missing dawn patrols.
George is no fool…in my books , his priorities are unquestionably right . [I DID say, in MY books !]
According to the web address above, George’s latest movie, "Dolphin Glide’ , is playing at my old stomping grounds, the Cremorne Orpheum !! …you might want to talk your dad into going to THAT one mate…it promises to be a BEAUTY !! [I used to live at Cremorne Point ]
“I surf with dolphins a lot, and they are always in the water. I wanted everyone to have the chance to experience that feeling, the feeling of surfing with a dolphin.”
It’s also the crudest… and it’s no coincidence! I love how a discussion about Greenough quickly degenerates into a expose of his questionable sexuality…
But it’s so damned funny…
I’d rather miss a few dawn patrols and get a little action. But, usually I can pull off both. But, girls hate it!!!
I get it. I think there are certain people on this earth, so dedicated to what their mind is telling them to explore, that their lives become what used to only be called monastic.
Centuries ago, the thoughts strong enough to chase all else away were about God & existence. So out of religion, the monastic traditions were born - parallel in Europe, the Near East, and Asia.
Today, to most, I believe, religion is more about community than philosophy. A strong indication is the trouble so many priests have with their vow of celibacy.
Yet I think that there are many people, Greenough and certainly some religious practitioners of course, but others in sciences, art, travel…whose own minds wander so deeply into their chosen vocation/avocation that all else is excluded and nearly impossible.
The monastic life, regardless of topic, may not always be voluntary. Whether or not any of us personally is put together like that leads us to the choices we make - but such singular dedication to anything should be respected, not questioned. Gay and straight are too narrow; a third option, monastic, should be considered as well.
But what do I know, I’m just a dumb surfer with a job and a wife and a couple a kids…
"I surf with dolphins a lot, and they are always in the water. I wanted everyone to have the chance to experience that feeling, the feeling of surfing with a dolphin."
I contacted Greg [ah the wonders of computers !!] and he said HE filmed that water footage of George and Paul… [sounds like two members of a sixties band my folks listened to !] on their mats , at Hollister Ranch, in 1978.
So, THAT segment of the movie was not New South Wales. I stand corrected. Love the spacy ‘pink floydish’ girl’s vocals on the track accompanying that footage, especially…real ‘any colour you like’ sorta stuff !
And, Greg also informed me ‘Fantasea’ is available on d.v.d. in Australia…wooho !! Josh, Lucas, Pandanus, whoever…if you haven’t seen this 1980s movie, I highly recommend it…it has a VAST assortment of boards and surfers, and the footage of Mark Warren and George camping on his property [?near lennox?] …yes, BEFORE he built that amazing house, is a good laugh !
…not forgetting the places on the wave George was able to go with THIS board, as evidenced in the 1965-67 New Zealand production ‘Children of the Sun’ [for those living on the Sunshine coast, it features moffarts, alex headland, and noosa also]
For some reason males in western culture seem to feel any man they do not understand or has his own set of values that differ from the norm is a homosexual.
It’s like the ultimate and most damaging accusation that is made in our strange culture, so it should not be tossed around like a catch phrase of the latest episode of "That 70’s show.
Greehough and others like him are what makes Surfing and design different than other sports. Our exrpession of art is a personal and intimate relationship with both what we ride and the ocean we ride it on. Your going to get some characters out of something like that.
