"GEORGE GREENOUGH: SURFING UNDER THE INFLUENCE

“Is this man worthy of 20 pages in a surfing magazine? He doesn’t even stand up. He’s a kneeboarder, a mat-surfer, a windsurfer, a cameraman, an inventor, a fisherman, a barefoot recluse, an innovator of things like fins, tube-rides and cutbacks. Err… At least. Words and Photos by too many people to fit in this space.”

Would you rather read 20 pages on a great innovator or see 20 ads with 20 year old morons launching airs that they’ll never land.

Respect the past…it’s what created the future.

Drew

I don’t know George at all. I have never meet him but he appears to me to be a complex man with simple needs ~ a most unusual combination.

Some recognize what greatness is, some aspire to greatness, some inherit the opportunity for greatness, some achieve greatness. We all are influenced by greatness. Greatness is something that is often imitated. George’s work in surfcraft is often imitated. He has influenced as many surfers as any man on the planet. His true worth will never really be known but his contributions to surf culture and surfcraft development are huge.

Consider that 90% of all the in-water footage shot in "Big Wednesday was taken by him with a camera he customized himself. And that Nat Young, who to this day is one of the finest surfers in the world credits his fin foils being the reason he won the world championship.

Two of the things I admire most about him is his resourcefulness and humility. He let’s his actions speak.

George surfs close to the water because of his personal preferences. He spends as much time as close to the dolphins as he can.

I wonder how close to the water we really are?

Aloha, Rich

P.S. I’m looking forward to reading the article.

Watch it there, drew. 30 years ago the 20 year old morons were riding the retro boards of today! It’s a natural progression of the sport.

As for Greenough, go get a copy of “The Innermost Limits of Pure Fun”. It will totally blow your mind! These dudes are shortboarding in 1968 and KILLING IT!

what up josh!!!

You gots that video?

When are the blanks coming in?

Dre

----I don’t know. What else can you say?? Married and wear shoes??I think he is about 62 or so also…I would say I hope i still ride waves when Iam his age.Oh, and I have been married twice…so far…

He’s a helluva sight smarter than the rest of us??

What the hell. He’s right, girls are over rated. All they do is make you feel like shit. I’m only sixteen and I have already learned this. Plus if the guy invented fins, he can’t be gay. It just doesn’t work that way, seriously.

Thank you VERY MUCH wardiew for posting thoese shots of greenhough at Wategoes!! Ive recently became a BIG fan of george and ‘Crystal Voyeger’ is the best film ever!

This guy is what I see as the greatest surfer of all time! he not only killed the longboard and showed us shortboarding but he also engaged us in the very spirit of surfing… See Crystal voyeger.

Greenhough rocks.

Josh.

PS… Chip if you are reading this, I read on ‘surfer’ that you had talked to george??true?COOL!

where garden grove bro?..and hes defantly not a fruit, no way. hes just smarter than the rest of us. shooes suck i hate shoes.

My first board was a greenough wilderness, I still have it, but its full of holes I put in it as a teen, I used it as a target for throwing ski poles!! What a knukle head!!

thanks hooting tubes for letting me /us know about that ! [I find surfer’s path a good mag…often get it]

I will definantly be buying THIS issue, that’s for sure !

The Australian Surfers Journal article I have on him [‘George’s scrapbook’] I often refer to.

Hi Josh,

…“listened to” , would be a better description …I wish I had a tape recorder in the phone !

I asked him a couple of questions about how his 'dolphin glide ’ movie / project was coming along and also, about foiling fins, and working with different materials [why not go to the source, I figure !!]

I found George a really interesting , friendly , helpful , and innovative guy to listen / talk to, [when I could keep up with him !]

Dale…aren’t YOU in touch with George on a regular basis, with your mat work ?

“Wardie” ?? !! … UNREAL !!

WELCOME aboard, mate !

…great to have you here…I’ve been seeing your shots of George for a while now !! …Good stuff !

[AND Paul Gross, where are you ? … and Chris Brock, I wonder ? ]

YOU may know , Wardie…was it Paul playing “surfmat bumper cars” with George at the end of the movie / video 'Fantasea ?

… I LOVE that footage, and the spacey music…I’m figuring THAT was filmed on the north coast , too ?

…did you film it, or Peter Crawford , perhaps ?

[I can see I’ll have to ‘pivate message’ you at some stage !]

ben

He can’t be gay or he would be biting that mat as some kinda pavlovian reflx wouldn’t he?

Seriously — so what if he is… it’s just a lifestyle choice … certainly not as crucial as say toe in…

Does anyone know George’s mailing address?

You may be right!

Those mats take a stiff wrist to ride!

But seriously , the guy is financially set you would’ve figured

that some Stripper would have latched onto him by now.

Big Suprise Hal!! Not EVERONE follows their Dick !! I have a few friends that have never married and rarely had relationships. I wish many times in my life I was more like them.

yup, put me in that group, single, not gay, no relationship… perhaps I should be on Ophra, or maybe someone here should be on Jerry Springer - along with a few more of us. Let’s face it this board fetish is meat and drink to him ‘my b/f loves his surfboard more than me’ ‘damn right girlie’
