george greenough

hey guys… so many of you talk about gg this and gg that… where does all that come from? can any of you tell me how i can see him in action now or read his documented works of design. i get all the ozzie mags here and i only know of one interview/article about him in the last 10 years in a small time publication called waverider… i spent hours going thru all my archives and could only find that one. ive seen 2 of his see thru spoon style kneeboards here on the gold coast in 18 years. he lives about a hour down the road from us?.. but so many of you refer to his “inventions”. i do see one thing (or the affects of) more often than any of the surfing stuff… the lense he developed and sold to george lucas for filming the close ups and special FX for star wars! i did really enjoy his barrel footage on the surfmat at lennox too! so do tell me where i can find more actual facts about him and his creations! http://www.feraldave.com

Australian Longboarding had a nice photo essay of his personal pics within the past year. A well documented book on his musings, drawings, and equipment would be a wonderful idea. Something to catalog all of the stuff he’s done. Something along the line of BuckysWorks for R. Buckminster Fuller. However there does seem to be a bit of idolatry around him. Who has the most access, most contact, remains truest to things he created decades ago. All that energy seems to be looking backward. He doesn’t seem to the person to care much about these lamprey. If any one knows Greenough and has had extensive contact/exchange with him (design-wise, etc.) it has to be Paul Gross! He’s a good source and wrote great article about Greenough a few years back in the Surfer’s Journal. I can’t recall the Vol. # at the moment. Check the archives for Paul…there should be a way to contact him.

Lampreys are primitive eel-like creatures, parasitic magazine writer- photographers. They literally attach themselves to their victims, sucking out as much information & fame-by-association as they can. When confronted, or when their host is of no further use, they sulk away in protest & begin hunting for another victim.

Oh, please. The only reason pro surfers have done as well as they have is because of the press. The both need each other. No one can survive without the other. Therefore, it is not parasitic. It is simbiotic. Without the pro surfers, who would the surf reporters focus on? Without the reporters, how would the pros get recognition. Now if only the Holleywood movie starts would figure that out and show some respect to the press instead of calling them paparazzi. The stars want the fame and glory, but only on their terms. Well, it doesn’t work that way. Watch the original Endless Summer to see G.G. kneeboarding Rincon. He goes forever and stays right there in the curl the whole time. He rips. In my humble opinion, he seemed to always be on a quest to gain more intimacy with the wave, to really know it. I have felt this way about many women over the years. You want to get inside, get wet, really explore. Oh wait. We are talking about surfing. Sorry.

Georges energy has always been directed forward. Hes quite happily focused on whats next, not with what was. With or without publicity, his wide-ranging curiousity and innovations have continued unabated. Hes definitely not one-dimensional. Regarding the media coverage surrounding him over the years, its been fickle, sometimes inaccurate and even deceptive. Unfortunately, most surfers whore interested in learning about George and his projects have few vantage points from which to sift through any of this. On a personal level, George makes good use of his answering machine to screen out the unwelcome… and hes a great bullshit detector. The many stories, insights, images and artifacts shared through his network of long-time friends including Charlie Coffee, Bob Duncan, Stan Pleskunas, Chuck Ames, Michael Cundith, Peter McGuire, Boyd Kellner, Warren Pfeiffer are invaluable. Yes, a well-documented look at his musings, drawings, and equipment would be a wonderful idea. The closest to that goal is the International Surfing Museums current exhibit, “George Greenough, Beyond Surfing”.

Dave, George is in the ocean almost everyday, surfing junk waves or not. On mat or sailboard. Photo, filming, fishing. He spends little time documenting his works of design. He shares, gives away and throws away. Hates to write and type. No internet connection or email address. His historically significant kneeboards are in the possession of others. He prefers to ride custom, high end surf mats. “he lives about a hour down the road from us… so do tell me where i can find more actual facts about him and his creations!” Make a phone call, go visit.

Get your hands on Brian Taylor`s “State of S” video documentary when it comes out… “Working out distribution as we speak. Looks like it will be pretty widely available, knock on wood… Hopefully in stores by end of year, doing research on timing and window for sales.” http://www.12milesout.com/client/eternal.php http://www.12milesout.com/client/eternal.php

If anyone knows George Greenough best and has had EXTENSIVE contact/exchange with him (design-wise, etc.) it has to be Paul Gross!!! He alone has the most access, most contact, remains truest to things Greenough created decades ago. So what if all that energy is used looking backward? Whats wrong with that? Paul Gross has also written great articles in The Surfers Journal about GG over the past years. Are you trying to insinuate that Paul Gross is a blood-sucking media lamprey??? Why shouldn`t PG take all the information he wants from GG and fame-by-association?? Sure when he was attacked here in is this petty little message board he sulked away in protest. What did you expect him to do? Leaving Swaylocks and cutting off his internet connection made perfect sense for someone of his genius!!!

With friends like you two, who in the hell needs enemies?
