I am in possession of a seemingly uncommon Gerry Lopez surfboard. My father has had the board since the early 80s. The story goes that he surfed with Gerry in the winter of 1980, and upon sharing their similar shaping styles, Gerry shaped this board to his preferences under the house and shipped it to him.
Don’t mind the wear, not posting with the intention to sell. I’m just happy the board is still in one piece. Funnily enough, Occy gave him the leash a few years later.
After some digging, I was able to find some other examples of boards with only the signature decal. One is in Peter McCabe’s collection and is one of the first boards Gerry took to G-Land, and another is in a photo from the 1980 pipe masters where Gerry is holding it. These boards, from my current understanding, would have been made right after he left lightning bolt but before some of his other projects. Most of them are G-Land personal riders, and it seems possible that this board was intended for G-Land but was given away instead. My father thinks Pete McCabe likely glassed it.
Does anyone have some insight into this period of Gerry Lopez boards? Just curious and looking to learn some more.
Will upload more photos when it lets me.
