getting a custom funshape/need help

Hey everyone,

It’s time for me to get a new surf board. I have been surfing for alm ost two years on the gulf coast of Florida.(which isn’t a lot here) I have been riding a 7’10" minilongboard thruster, my friends 7’ egg singlefin, and a 6’3" beater shortboard. I am competent on the minilongboard and egg, but I want to progress to something smaller that isn’t hard to catch waves and ride like my shortboard. I can ride the shortboard on certain days, but I cant perform with it or anything serious. I am going with a local shaper in Florida, but I just want to get a few more opinions. I’m going to be surfing in South Florida because I will be attending Florida Atlantic University in the fall. I think I want something like a 6’8" funshape. What can I do to a 6’8" board to make it good for wave catching, good for riding small waves, and good for performing and progressing when I get there.(rail shape, bottom shape, nose shape, tail shape, etc.) I weigh 145 lbs and am 5’9".

Thanks ahead to anyone who helps me out. It will be greatly appreciated.

Alex

low rail…full, round nose. probably something more eggy than a full on fun-shape. something you can ride as a singlefin, and then slap on some sidebites for those 3 or 4 days a year that it’s worth it.

i’m also 5’9"/145…and i live 5 minutes away from FAU…been here my whole life, and been surfing here for most of it.

made a board for a buddy awhile back, and recently redesigned the shape and will be making the sequel for myself. it’s a 6’6"…well…i’m not really sure how to describe it. basically, it’s a longboard shape smushed down to 6’6". a short longboard. a shlong board. anyhow, the guy i did the original for really digs it, and i’m pretty stoked on what i sketched up for the sequel. now just gotta make fact from fiction (as soon as i get through exams…blech).

A shlong board. That’s funny. Can we add that to the Swaylopedia or glossary, whatever it is? Sounds like good advice, too. Mike

I started out on LB’s and had tried a couple of shortboards in the 6’1" to the 7’0" range and bought and sold boards until I met Steve Forstall (Coda Surfboards). He shaped me this 6’10" quad and in anything above waist high with a little Juice it catches waves like a champ turns on a dime and accelerates, this board has helped me progress so much I can’t say enough good things about it. Last Dec I had him shape me a 6’2" Fish and it catches waves even better than the 6’10", at least in the smaller less powerful waves we get on the GC.

Here is a pic of the 6’10" and the 6’2" both are EPS/Epoxy and are extremely durable boards.

here’s the logo and the specs on the redesigned shlongboard…

Harbour-style nose channels to a flat midsection with a vee/double concave out the back. square nose. bumped rail. moon tail.

i’ve posted pics before of the original shlongboard (i believe it was in the “How Your Boards Ride” thread.

stoked to see how the new evolution of the shlongboard turns out.
