Getting Resin Swirls on the Rails...

I’ve been seeing a lot of cool designs using resin, so I started experimenting. Resin color work on the rails has been around since forever, but I never even bothered until now. Anyhow, I was in a hurry to get out of here but I took a couple of shots of some works in progress. Maybe I can get better shots soon if anyone is interested…

Those looks great, a lot more detail in the pattern than I’m used to seeing. Whats the bottom look like? Any special technique?

Hey Plus one.

The second pic looks brilliant. how did you get those patterns on the rails. I’ve only done a couple of swirls and I always found the colours on the rails kinda blended in.

Excellent work.

I’ll try to get some pics of the bottoms in the next day or so; pretty basic swirls (they just run lengthwise on the board). The rails are much finer in the swirl detail and involve a separate pour. I’m using the same original resin batch as for the bottom, just pour off a mini-batch for each rail. (I’m using the swirl-in-bucket technique) that is, catalyze separately, then pour about 1/3 clear, 1/2 base color, then another shot of a complementary color, and a tiny shot of a contrasting color. Do not stir; just draw an “x” ONCE in the bucket. The “buckets” are small paper drinking cups to get an idea of the batch size. Just hold out your dry cloth lap and pour whatever pattern strikes you at the moment. Don’t try to soak the rail, just make a pattern down the rail. I found out two things. Resin consumption goes quick so be sparing as you go, and resin mixes with your hand motion so use a “fresh” cup for each rail. Leave lots of dry cloth on your rails as the bottom-layup will cover over all this pouring (with little negative effect). Lastly, as with the bottom of the board, don’t over-squeegee, just get the job done. Tip: these batches tend to be a little slow and will start to drain-though the cloth. Mix a real hot batch of clear and cherry coat the entire lam to lock down everything…

I finally got a shot of the bottom of a customer-requested board. 3 batches of different color mixes to do the bottom. Separate sub-batch for each rail. Hope to have a flash unit soon to get better photos. Sorry about the quality…
